Heated steering wheel retrofit - help!

Gents/Ladies -- So I tried replacing my stock sport steering wheel with the heated version today. No luck. I had a shop replace the clock spring with the heated plug and install the wheel. When you press the heater button the light barely goes on (like it's not getting enough power) and the steering wheel doesn't heat up. Bummer.

Looking through the detailed instructions for the e53 retrofit, it looks like I might also need to insert a new contact relay or fuse but I have no idea where or how to do that. I've searched the forums for e70 instructions and wasn't able to find anything.

Has anyone done this on an e70? I could really use some help if you have.

If not, the next step will be to take it into the dealership to see if it's a programming issue. I'd like to avoid the several hundred $ charge I'm sure that will amount to if possible.

Looks like I'm blazing a new trail here, huh. I'm surprised no one's done this.

Not that it may help but I pulled the wiring schematic off my shopkey system. If I were to wager a guess I would suggest you are missing the steering wheel heating control module. The "steering wheel switch center" you are using could also be a problem. Computer data lines are streaming information between the switch center, control module, heating element and temp sensor, and to the electronic junction block.

Fuse F12 10A right side of dash and fuse F134 5A rear panel are the fused circuits. The electronic junction block is providing B+ to the switch center.

As with most all things BMW they do tend to over engineer. There is even communications to the HVAC system.

If you do not have the heating control module and install one I do think you will at least require dealer assistance to make this work. Hope I am wrong because I do like my heated steering wheel, will not buy a vehicle without it now.

PM me if you would like the schematic, I wont post here because of licensed software. I could email it to you sometime tomorrow if you like.

This is super helpful. Thank you. PM on the way.

We did add the fuse in the dash but nothing in the rear. I also asked about adding a contact relay but it seems like the contact relay in question is on a sealed portion of the junction block.

No idea about the heating control module but that sounds promising.

Nicolak, also I left the dealership with a wiring diagram they gave that confirms the F12 10 amp fuse in the front but it says it's connected to F173 fuse (i think listed as 250A) as part of the A406 fuse box. Does that make sense to you?

The schematic I was looking at earlier was a sub wiring diagram for the heated wheel only. I do not recall the 250A circuit. I will look to see what power distribution circuits I have and send them to you also.

people have retrofitted heated steering wheel to E53s - look on x5drivers.co.uk

Not sure if it can be done in the E70 without dealer programming, but if you can I recommend it. Got it on my 2010 35d and it's much better than I was expecting, so good luck.

Unfortunately, no. I gave up after I took the steering column apart for the 2nd time and realized that you need another $450 part to make it work on top of the heated wheel and wheel ring.

I've done it

First of all, I live in Korea, so it just might be a different situation here. I read howellm70's post from here, and thought about giving up installing heated steering wheel. But by then I had already bought heated steering wheel from ebay so I just had to find a way to install it. I finally found a guy who works on BMW electronics like alarm, and remote keys. I paid him $300, and according to him, he made a single module for heating control, and it just works find on my car. And it just work fine on my car. Well, one downside is that I gave up voice command button on steering wheel to use it as turn off button. Heating control button only turns on the heat.

I think if there is a technician who knows about electronics and module work, it will be a easy job.
