Is it an option I don't have? When I look in idrive ("i"/settings/vehicle-tires/door locks) there is no "tailgate" option like my manual suggests. Thanks in advance!

look at the struts that hold your liftgate - if they are thin and have no wires going into them, you got regular struts. If they are BEEFED up, and have a small cable going into each one, then you got power liftgate.

From what i remember, the hall sensors are inside the spindles, they are not on the gate or gate frame (not like a security sensor "bug" on a house door). Check for chaffed cabling going to each of the strut - they are inside a grommet, and you might need to pry the rubber grommet out to see if the wires inside lost any insulation. also, if you "knead" the wire bundle with your fingers, check to see if the light comes on the dash for the tailgate - it may point to a chaffed wire. There is also the brain for this operation, i think somewhere in the trunk packets... these types of problems are the worst to trace but it gives you a starting point. Keep us posted

I do have very beefy struts, will look for wires tonight, will also investigate whether it could be a fuse issue

if the brain is dead, the GM has no idea that there is a power liftgate (option appears when module is present). On the newer (post i-Bus) cars, sometimes the GM needs to be pre-told about some modules in order to recognize them, it is done in the programming files. But, if you had the power liftgate from the factory, you can run your VIN on bmwvin.com and see if it was equipped so from the factory, regardless of wires or no wires (things might have been changed by previous owner, if you are not the original one)

There is no 40a fuse in slot 99, so I'm thinking there is no automatic liftgate
