The skinned knuckles were well worth not paying someone else a few hours labor.
But I'm a cheapskate. Probably driving the wrong marque, but I'm also a glutton for punishment.

Funny response, I'm not laughing. Forums are to help each other.
Acetone comes in many many forms. From the stuff you get at the drugstore to the stuff you get at the hardware. This is not my first rodeo, nor am I stupid. A simple answer takes as long to write as an intelligent one. |

***UPDATE***
I had my thermostat replaced by an Indy. I am now running at the prescribed 88 degrees Celsius. I do notice the X runs smoother. Should have had this done probably a few years ago. I still get the DPF warning, but I think it is the 250k warning mentioned on this forum in another post. |

Just replaced my T-Stat at 110K miles. It probably needed changing sooner. The DIY instructions were a major help. Ended up taking the radiator out to help with EGR flange bolt reinstall. I also tied a piece sewing thread around the flange bolts, so when I dropped them, they could be easily retrieved (use to do this in the Air Force. Dropping a screw/bolt down a vertical stab would cause two days of maintenance).

Damn that’s a brilliant idea about the thread! Wish I had known that sooner! It is possible to get at with the fan and radiator in place.. couldn’t get the fan out without breaking the plugs and clips so I left it in.

Hello all.
Did the thermostats, and while finishing, I can´t seem to get the alarm for too low coolant level to go away. The system was filled, I have run the electric pump for almost half an hour, I have squeezed all accessible hoses, it has idled up to temperature and the reservoir is full. But the alarm is still there. I have checked with a scan tool to see if it was a code that had to be reset to go away, but there are no active fault codes. Where is this sensor for coolant level positioned (radiator, coolant reservoir or ..)? Could i have forgotten to connect something? Anyone else encounter this? Any help appreciated. UPDATE: the next day the warning was gone. All good, but not sure why it took so long. Last edited by 08-730d; 12-27-2017 at 04:20 PM. |

I just did mine.Thank you OP for all the info. My X5d jade 75,000 miles and the temp was reading 74 degrees. After changing it to the new thermostat, it's now reading 85 normally. About a year ago, the egr cooler developed a crack. after that, one of the glow plugs went bad. All fixed by the dealership.

Just wanted to thank sgrice for the writeup. Excellent info. Had to redo the wife's x35d as the shop I had to it (I was incapacitated after a surgery) had botched the job and pinched the gasket on the thermostat. Has been leaking for awhile I'm guessing judging from the coolant residue on the engine, trans, and of course the soaked engine diaper.
I ended up doing the water pump, thermostat, idler, tensioner, and drive belt. Maybe the shop that did the thermostat back in January will do the AC belt for me as a maya culpa. We'll see. Thanks again.
