I really hope the new X5 doesn't grow much larger. I mean this E70 is pretty large and I wouldn't be interested in anything larger as this is border line large suv class.

There are smaller Xs for those who think X5 is bigger.
Do you know that the new X3 is almost as big as E53 X5 and faster than any E53 X5?
And if X3 is bigger there is an X1.

Bring it!
Just went through this analysis today. We borrowed a GL for the day to see if we could make the switch to allow a bit more room for the third row for our kids. We just couldn't bring ourselves to do it. MB is nice, but doesn't compare to the X5. So we ordered an almost identical '11 to replace our '10 with 20k miles.

I agree that bigger is not better. BMW should not try to do a "people mover" a la MB GLs which are really Chrysler mini vans. For us, the E70 is perfect size. I don't think an X3 has the same qualities as the X5, just as a 328 is not a substitute for a 528. Like the idea of lighter and possibly hybrid, if it has the performance. Don't try to be all things to all people. Do what you do well. For BMW, that means superb performance and high quality.

, where did you hear that? I would like to throw out my shenanigans card on that one. (I don't know for a FACT that you are wrong though, just seems strange to me)

I'm pretty sure that the GL is built on an extended ML chassis, at the same plant in Alabama. The new Jeep Grand Cherokee is built on the ML architecture, and interestingly, the new Dodge Durango is built on an extended version of that same architecture. The GL has a longer wheelbase than the new Durango, but it may be that both are based on the same general direction.

I'm glad to see that Chrysler got a few good things from the Mercedes debacle, like the E-class architecture for the 300/Charger (even if older) and the ML-class architecture for the GC/Durango. Fiat looks to be making a real effort to improve the vehicles, and hopefully they'll recover from the terrible "Daimler Years" that set them back and nearly killed them.

  • Modular aluminum chassis
  • Sporty styling
  • Lighter in weight than E70 X5
  • Base X5 with 2L 4-cylinder (probably ActiveHybrid) engine.
  • More leg room than E70, which also means, you know what
  • |- or "sideways T" shaped taillights(sort of similar to F25 X3).
  • Hoffmeister kink somewhat similar to F25 X3
  • Some BMW Concept CS design elements
  • Sculpted surface and body lines (this is becoming common in the auto industry e.g. new Hyundai Sonata)
  • Wide body appearance and 3D look wheel arches.
Teaser pic....
I like it. I personally think that a lot of the European modders like Lumma, Harte, G-Power, etc have all enfluenced the design of these models in some way. Like the Lumma roof railings - they existed prior to BMW even having an M for the X5.

I'd be in favor of a weight savings, not too sure if I like that design.

The next gen 3-series and 2012 6-series coupe come with the new shape of angel eyes. We have seen these on Gran coupe concept(my signature pic). Next X5 is expected to have these angel eyes.
