What kind of mood would you be in if you are thinking you just lost $25,000 - $30,000? |

He wasn't snappy with me, he was snappy with another forum member. I understand the frustration associated with it, but taking it out on other ofrum members is not the way to handle things.

Ok, so spend some time reading the post and not to be a dic*, but, its a waste of bandwidth and storage so I'll just give you my answer since no one really spit out a number. Althought the piss match between who spells properly and if they have their grammar in check was pretty funny.
Anyways, honestly, you want a fair price for your X? Look up the value of the X. Now I am sure you took this think to an indy, dealer, whoever; after you dumped money in your X by trying to diag it yourself. Now if you think a new motor is in order, then price accordingly. Say the X is worth $30K, now deduct the $10 to $12K it will cost to have open heart surgery done on her. So you are looking at $20-$18K for your ride. Now you can price it how ever you want, but if you are talking about a new motor then that's how you would price it. You were talking about placing members in your shoes, now do the opposite. Members who buy want a deal and sellers always want top dollar. Nothing wrong with that. That's why it is called negotiation. No one is going to know what low balling is and what your magical number is if you don't shoot out at least some type of number. To each his own. When the dealer forgot to put oil in my CTS4 3.6DI 3 months ago and blew the motor, they offered $19K. The Caddy was a 08 with 30K on the clock and loaded with a sticker of $55. I took it. My thought was when they put a new motor in, how is it going to run? I've got a 100K warranty, but I don't want to be in the waiting room every week clearing CEL's, Stabillitrak, or issues with the AWD. So the $19K was worth it to me to just get another CTS cheap. Some call it a lowball offer and some think it's fair. In conclusion, if I were to shoot an offer, I'd give you $19K. Now I don't know what offers you got, but I doubt anywhere in the low teens. IMHO, $19K is fair, $21K is pushing it, and anything over $25K, I'm sure you can find a different low/mid mileage 4.8is that is covered and ready to drive out the door. Just my $.02.

really though..if the X was worth $30k as an example and now needs a new $10k engine, which makes it worth $20k. As a buyer why would I buy a $20K X5 and spend another $10K on an engine instead of just buying a healthy $30K X5. That is less uncertainty and therefore less risk than getting a broken one.
Just the thoughts from a buyers perspective.

^ both of you should google the price of a "new" motor...... Wait, I'll spoil it for you. Are you ready for this? Are you sitting down?
$25k !!!!!! And that does not include intake OR any eletrics. OR THE PRICE OF REMOVING THE OLD AND REPLACING WITH THE NEW ONE. So if I was him, I would jump, lunge, leap, franticly thrash at anything infront of me to get the X5 in your driveway ASAP!!!! Now does his "tone" sound a little more understandable? Yiur next post will say.... "he doesn't need "new". Get one from a crashed X5 for much less." And the reality of that, $10k for the motor and $5k for R&R. So he is still at $15k. It is easy play it down when it's not your savings account. |

i spoke to my mechanic who is BMW tech and also my partner in the motorcycle industry and is in business for a long time and does BMW and Mercedes specificlly. I called him and told him about this engine, he looked it up and said his price was 10k and lowest he found with 70k miles for 9k for engine. Plus labor to take out old eninge and put new one in plus re program everything and stuff.

For example, a friend of mine is a mechanic. I guy came in with an 06 Audi A6. The car would not run at all. It was going to end up costing the customer 1-2k just to disassemble the motor to figure out what was wrong. He ended up buying the car for WAY under market value. 20 hours of labor later (yanked motor and trans, took apart heads and rebuilt), the car ran right again. Point is, the average person cannot take the risk of it costing that much.

Agreed. Even $15K is too high. For someone who isn't a mechanic they would have to get a really, really, really (read: low ball) deal in order to make it worth the risk.

Too keep it simple, lets say his X WAS worth $30K. And it needs $15K worth of repairs. So asking $15K is still too high, because the new owner would have to go through the hassle of actully "fixing" it. So what is that worth. The hassle? |

The hassle is worth some, but the real COST here is the RISKs of all the unknown getting it fixed. From any financial investing point of view, RISK costs a lot. like...i dont know the reliabliry of my "new" used engine and its install...
