DIY bluetooth parts?
Is it possible to buy this part and some sort of install kit from a dealer and DIY it instead of having to buy a full kit from EAS or other? Thanks for any help. Joe Clark |

That part number is a BMW Assist BT module. It may not have the built-in voice recognition function, like the "normal" Bluetooth modules. It is definately worth asking the seller if the module had VR (also know as SES).
Depending on the year and model of your car, BMW offers a variety of retrofit kits. Plus, if BMW does not have standard kit, you can get a retrofit kit for a similar module and adapt it to your car.

The seller indicates that it does do SES and/or VR. Is this an item that I can buy to use in a DIY kit? What else is needed?

How much are they asking for the part? The money can be better spent on a BT retrofit w/ integrated Voice Activation: BMW Bluetooth Retrofit Kit for e53 X5 http://www.europeanautosource.com/pr...roducts_id=301

I do not have my ETK handy, but BMW makes a kit for around $250 that has pretty much everything you need (adapters, eject box, antenna, etc.) except the module. Your local dealer should be able to find the kit PN for your car.

Well, I bought this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=200008941542 And it appears that I'll have to buy some other parts, as stated above. I understand about the full bluetooth retrofit that you sell, Tom, but I guess I fail to see the big diff. between buying your kit and making your own? Also, Brian, If you could tell me what parts I need to make the above work in my car, 02/02 x5 4.4i, that would be great, as I can't get my local dealer to tell me much of anything. Tom, if you want to reply to me privately in addition to my other email to you about a seperate issue, that would be fine. I can always resell this item, it just seemed like a good deal. Thanks guys for your ongoing help. Joe |

I hope it's a assist/bluetooth combo module you got. I have a feeling that it might just be a assist model...

Keep in mind that the BMW parts counter has a parts freeze on all generations of ULF modules until all the 1st Generations are sold. If you get one at a parts counter - chances are they are the old 1st Gen modules, these are not recommended for use - they ceased production of these models in 6/03. The 1st Generation modules do not offer SMS Text Messaging (if your carrier supports it) or Notepad features. If you have Navigation, a 1st Generation module will not offer voice navigation. The new 9th Generation modules started about a month ago - get the newest technology you can for the price. We even include the new 2nd Generation microphones with the kits which offer better noise cancellation and audio quality. For something of this caliber - make sure you are getting the most up to date equipment for your vehicle. Getting an over-the-counter kit with the 1st Generation ULF is equivalent to buying a tape player for your X5. It's already obsolete. As always, feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.
