I have the pearl and my wife has the 8800. These phones WILL NOT transfer the address book if you have groups set up within your address book. I had 2 groups and once I deleted them my pearl transfered flawlessly.
Her 8800 never had groups and she has no issues with my 06 X5 or her 06 325Xi wagon...
