I have completed the front doors. The first door took me nearly 2.5 hours -- OK I had something break and had to run to the hardware store. Door 2 took around 30 minutes, much easier the second time!

One hint for those doing this, when you try to pop the door off, there is a fairly thin cable that is used to light the door handle. The piece it attaches to on the door is very fragile (meaning I broke it). A little glue fixed it. It is important to remove that cable first.

I also chose to solder the woofer housing instead of clip it on as the instructions said.

The person who puts the Torx on the tweater mounting must be mad, those where screwed in there pretty good.

The new speakers are awesome. I actually heard the sound of cymbals in an X5 for the first time (this is my fourth X5).

Tomorrow I tackle the rears, should be pretty easy now that I have the hang of it. I'm also going to attempt the dash mids tommorow.

I wish the Bav folks had a drop in subwoofer (that fit where the OEM should go). I can tell already that the system is going to really want a sub. I don't want to put a box in my already too small cargo area. I have the non-DSP model.

Anyways, I do highly recommend the MB Quarts. The tweeter alone is worth the price.

Sounds Great! Keep us informed as the rear are concerned... Hopefully you have the shades so you can tell us your experience in removing them...

Day 2 and the rear speakers were the plan. The rear sunshade is a major pain in the ...

Funny thing is the first one popped right out. You stick a small screw driver in the little inside top crack of the shade and push the bracket up. Boom - the shade popped out. Bad news is on my other rear door, it refuses to come out. It appears it was smashed into place at the factory.

The rear doors are harder to work with than the fronts. The door handle light is mounted tighter (and it broke the minute I took the door cover off). The door itself doesn't seem as easy to put back on. And finally the window shade is difficult to put back in.

So, I now have one door that is installed (with a broken door handle light) and another door that I can't get the shade out of.

I know someone on the board replaced the rear door speakers without disassembling the entire door. I'm going to PM him. The woofers can be replaced easily without taking the entire door apart. The tweeter looks harder. I may just have a dealer help me disassemble and reassemble the door.

Before I give a final conclusion I'm going to let the speakers break-in. The woofers are "tight" and need some breaking in, I'm hoping they get a little deeper sounding with time.

Overall the MB Quart system sounds fast and crisp. For some it may be a bit too bright (and this set was noted as brighter). With a decent sub the brightness would be fine. Without it I'm going to reserve judgement until everything breaks in.

The installation instructions would benefit with more info on the wires behind the doors and more pictures/description of the rear door install. As an example, the rear doors only have 3 screws holding them in where the fronts have 4.

Shoot me any questions, happy to share my experiences to far. I haven't tried the dash speakers yet.

I PM'd u as to how i was able to install
the rear door speakers w/o removing the
door. it involved a little twisting and
bending on my part, but it's doable. i also
used a handheld mirror to see what i was
doing.

I'm wondering if that's from the replacements from BSW being 5 1/4. If I'm not mistaken the factory speakers are 6 1/4. I know some people replace them with 6 1/2.

Does anybody think it makes a difference?

BigX5er: Thanks for the detailed post and the feedback! I will pass your notes on to our tech / instruction guy and let him make adjustments as needed. If you would like assistance, please call us: 404.963.8857. We are happy to give tips and pointers on this stuff!

Also, keep your eyes peeled for a single 8" drop-in subwoofer system that we have in development for the X5's! Goes in the factory location. That should be on the market in about 3 months or so is my guess.

Josh4.6: The speaker size difference does change the dynamics of the sound, but it's more a product of the way the driver itself behaves. The MB Quarts produce tighter, more accurate midbass, which gives the impression of less bass response even though it's more true to the music that's been recorded.

Wait a minute; i thought the factory units were 5.25"....? Am I understanding that they are 6.25"?

Darn, I now I just read another thread that says the door mid-woofers are 6.5"... Im confused now...

WHAT??!!

Are you saying what I think you are saying? A subwoofer that is "plug and play" for those of us not happy with the standard X5's system? Will it work with non-DSP systems? How much? How easy? When can I order it?

The sub option in the future sounds AWESOME! i'll be the first in line for this! Now someone please correct me if I am wrong, but this info:

Dash speakers - 2.5" cone mids

Door tweeters - 1" dome tweeters

Door midwoofers - 6.5"/165mm

... is what the X currently has. And if this is the case, why not replace these with the same size, using an aftermarket brand....

Very fair question and I wish I had an answer! The MB Quart speakers I installed have a ring attached to the 5.25" driver making the mount size 6.5". Why they didn't go with a 6.5" driver is something Bavarian Soundworks would have to answer and I'll bet they have avery good reason.

After having the speakers for a few days they are growing on me. The low end is loosing up and the speakers break in. The MB Quart set is very capable of making bad sources sound bad! You'll find that radio stations (or especially Sirius) that sounded OK with the OEM speakers can now sound really lousy. But it's the source that's bad.

It really is amazing how poor the OEM tweeters are.

I still have one door to go...
