MP3 with New Radio Module

I just got the Radio Module replaced in my '02 X5 and now see TR-01 on one side and CD1 on the other, indicated that I now have the version capable of dealing with MP3's, Aux In etc. I bought it in Dec 0f '05 and thought that the CD Changer they put in would be capable of playing/decoding MP3's. I burned a CD using iTunes (MP3 CD) and all I got was electronic static. Is it possible that even as of Dec '05 the dealer still had older non MP3 capable CD changers in stock?

My understanding is the only ability of the MP3 compatible CD Changer's is that they will show the title and track details etc.

I have a CD changer the same as you and I can play my burnt CD's but get no info just as you say CD1 and Track number.

Some CD's I have burnt dont work though, eg, JVC wont play in my CD player but Panasonic and phillips will. Though the JVC will play in my wifes car.

My understanding was the MP3 Compatible CD changer didnt come or was available till February 2006.

Was afraid that might me the case. I am going to remoce the CDC and check the part number. I wonder if there is a specific verified set of US part #'s that are known to work.

I didn't remove the changer from the mount as I saw that the dealer left the BMW white sticker with the part number on it. It says 65 12 8 385 988. So not sure if anyone can verify that I'm hosed or not

Edit = Looks like that is the part number for the bracket - doh! I will remove and get the changer part number.

Here's the thing. Changing the radio would have only enabled the ID3 tag display (BMW Call this AUDIOTEXT) and folder navigation.

Playing MP3 CDs is a function of the CD Changer. Therefore, if it didn't play MP3 CDs before you changed the radio, the fact you changed the radio wont effect its ability to play MP3 CD, only display ID3s ....

What this means is that if you add the MP3 CD Changer to vehicles prior to 9.2005 (before the new radio), then you can still hear the tracks fine. Its just you cant navigate through directories or see the track info.

I use iTunes to burn my CDs. All my tracks were ripped at [email protected]. They play fine, as well as ID3 tags display great ! If you sort the playlist by Album name, iTunes will create seperate directories/folders for each album. Nice if you want to take advantage of directory/folder search with the new radio.

I've got the Mp3 CD Changer .. I'll check the part # and report back.

Part number is 82 11 0 028 760 with a manufacture date of 2005 April which means I am hosed. Apparently, it needs to have a manufacture date in the 2nd half of 2005, like September. Wonder what this will get on eBay, as a 9 month old changer.

Hmm ... well you could always go back to your dealer and say that you were under the impression when you purchased it that it played MP3's ...

You can purchase the new MP3 CD Changer here.

Here is some good info on what the build dates of MP3 support

http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/243524

It is hard to know exactly when the radios were cut over, but I do know for sure the 961 and 962 BM53 Radio shows ID3 text as I have one of each of those radios. The changers must have been built from 09/05 but they were not avaiable from BMW unit early 2007. Units are built in Hungary and then go to Germany for distribution to dealers and mfg facilities
