BSW or JL subwoofer system?

Which would you recommend, and why?

Thanks!

The BSW sub uses an 8" sub of good quality, that does better than you'd think and requires very little modification. The JL uses a 10" of a lower stature (for fitment), but also required the inner lining to be removed from the rear side cover door. I don't think anyone on here has had both to make a good comparison, but I guess a decision made should be influenced by what kind of music you listen to and at what volume levels etc. because each setup will handle slightly different.

What do you mean by "lower stature for fitment"?

It is the cheapest 10" sub JL has available. The sub enclosure is only so deep so can't fit a better sub depth wise. The W1 fits but the W3 won't fit.

I personally have the BSW box which I bought used and empty for a good price with an Infinity reference 8" sub in it. It sounds pretty damn good for what it is and I don't think the JL could do much better for the music I listen to.

Ah - lower stature of JL subs to fit the box. The way that is worded makes it sound like you think the JL is a lower level sub than the BSW, which isn't fair to the JL.

The w1 is a really good sub, they also make the w0 and WX lines which slot below it. Yea it is on the cheap side but they don't need a ton of power and sound great.

Personally I think I'm going to have a custom box built for a Kicker 10" L7, with a cutout in the door for better pass-through. If I can get away with it I may even try for a 12" - There is just no replacement for displacement

The only problem I have with the BSW system is the 8" sub vs a 10" - I simply don't think it can move enough air to be really effective, at least for my listening style.

I've seen on this forum before someone do just what you described, a homemade box with the square kicker (although they may nave used the L5) with the door cut out with a screen cover mounted to it. I haven't seen anyone do a 12" in the side panel with much success yet simply due to the airspace and mounting depth available. Though I have seen 12" or bigger flush mounted in the spare well of a 3.0i since it din't have the air suspension.

I think if you do a custom built ported box you may be able to do a 12" depending on mounting depth available, but that would likely stick you with a lesser quality sub as far as available excursion due to mounting depth. The 10" is more doable and there are a couple good threads about home made boxes with many pics and dimensions.

Good luck and I hope to see a thread in the future with your outcome!

I think I'd actually go for the L5 because of cost and power handling.

It shows a mounting depth of 6-13/16" which should be doable, I want the carpet on the side door to be flush with the front edge of the subwoofer surround. May take some creativity with the fuse box location and some other things but I think I can do it with the help of a fiberglass guy I know.

As for sealed vs. ported - for a given sub a sealed box requires less volume than ported so that would be the way to go. They are also more forgiving when run on the small side.

I have a 15" L7 in my GTO right now, recessed into the tire well, and the box is undersized by a couple of cubic feet. It still sounds really good, and LOUD (of course 1600 watts helps too)

If all else fails, the 10" wouldn't be a bad choice I'm sure. I'm not looking for anything obnoxious like in the GTO but always like to run on the extreme side of things

Sorry for the offtopic posts

With the fiberglass work you should be able to get a good enough sized box for the 10" L5 to sound good. I'd just keep an amp remote know within reach for quick level adjustments from the drivers seat. (put mine in the ashtray)

If that all goes through correctly you should post up a thread with pics and such, I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one interested in the new box design.

Yea I think I will have the system volume and sub volume controllers right by the 12v outlet in the ashtray.

We'll see how my financials go over the next few months, I'm really tempted to do something subtly wild.
