Mystery connections

Hey everyone,

Just bought a 2002 X5 3.0 (sport, 5 speed) to replace my Volvo V70R, which I spend more time under than in. I love Bimmers and have had an '03 325i, '02 M3 and still have a '68 2002.

My X5 has a flip down LCD screen for the rear passengers, which if I've read correctly was VCR based for 2002. I've rooted through the rear compartment and found no VCR or DVD player, but some non-factory wires (zip tied not fabric wrapped), a factory "switching module" and some connectors. I'm not super familiar with ICE or electronics, and some help deciphering these would be great, and advice on what to do: ie, add an aftermarked DVD player etc.

In the photos, the "switching module" is under the floor, with that 4-port connector and a 1/8 male plug labled "remote in" (the brown wire). In the other pic you can see a 2-port plug to the left under the bundle of cable, which is all in the right rear compartment.

Thanks!
Jonathan

Can you post some photos of the LCD screen setup? It would help in figuring out exactly what system you have and what you might still need.

It's a start. I'm confused about the switching module. Can you post a few wide shots of the setup in the car and also including what is behind the pop out LCD monitor (there should be an A/V module mounted behind it). Also a few photos of the sides of the switching module so that I can see the connectors. Hopefully then once we identify everything I'll be able to locate the installation instructions for you and then ideally you can buy the missing components and have a complete working system.

Here are some more shots:
The complete LCD fixture from bellow (the "wings" to the sides are empty storage spaces, presumably for DVDs or VHS tapes). There's an IR port at the rear (for the headphones, which I have) and the second shot is of the rear of it with the shroud pulled away.
The right rear compartment has the two-pin connector I wrote about (shown as the complete compartment and a close up of the plug). The amp was my addition.
Next is the spare-compartment, and you can see the interface in the top right corner. Following that are shots of the interface, front, rear and top, and one with the black multipin plug removed to show the connection type.
Lastly I took a close up of the loose connections that are sitting beside the interface box.
Let me know if there's anything more I can do! Thanks!
Jonathan

Okay, I'm pretty clear on what's what, just one more question. Pop off the light fixture that is mounted on the part between the 'wings' and see what's underneath. There should be the A/V switch module underneath. If not, then we have some work to do.

Just looked under the light panel and there's nothing but the harness for the lights and the rear seat tilt controls.

I'm just guessing, but did the DVD/VCR live under the trunk boards, with power coming from the 4-pin plug in the last photo, a remote wire (also in the last photo) and then the video and audio outs plugged into the silver module? The only thing I can't understand is how you'd control the player ie: start, stop, FF etc.

Post a pic of the spot under the light panel. My understanding is that it is the intended location of the A/V switch module which for some reason apparently the previous owner mounted somewhere else entirely. Quite amazing really that the cables were long enough!

To answer your questions... the VCR unit mounted in the trunk behind the folded seat (see the small photo with the rectangular box that occupies a heck of a lot of trunk space) while the DVD unit (if so equipped) mounted above the nav computer. They were controlled by remote controls. See other photos for the DVD unit and DVD remote control.

Here are the two setups in schematic form:

That's a ful alpine system. The display is a TME-750. The gold box is the screen driver. If you go to Alpine's website you should be able to download the PDF installation manual which will tell you what connections are what.

The control of the systam comes from an IR eye in the LCD, through to the gold box, and back up the RGB cable (big square one) to the DVD player (missing).

Edit: You may also have an additional IR eye or wired/wireless headphone setup, looking at some of the pictures. The 3.5mm jacks are either audio or IR.
