the concensus view is..., for a "BMW", they really come with sh*tty speakers. bought mine used in 2005. it came with 3 blown speakers. did the BSW Stage 1 upgrade. Man, whatta difference!

This would depend on your budget, or how much you are willing to drop at any given time. I highly recommend the BSW upgrade regardless of your knowledge of high end car audio systems. I dropped the full system in my '06 e53 about a month ago and couldn't be happier. I spent about a month doing the research and was considering DLS Scandanavia speakers with either a solobaric or JL audio for the sub. This would've required TWO new amps and about $1k more from my pocket. Not to mention the headache of having to run wires, etc.

In the end, the BSW system was all I needed... well made speakers that significantly improve your stereo system immediately! Designed to integrate perfectly... throw in free shipping and a 30-day MBG! You've got nothing to lose my friend...

So what do you think I need to buy from BSW to get me up and running?

I purchased the speaker upgrade package and the subwoofer upgrade at the same time so that I could get the discount ($50-$60 USD). They say it should take about 3 hours to install, but if you've never taken apart your X5 (like me), the amount of time will be doubled. I also recommend the dynamat and tool kit options they offer. Good luck!

My car doesn't have a sub as standard so I guess I might need to make a sub box and use a pioneer sub as others have done and make it up myself as I don't think BSW offer a sub set up if you don't already have one installed as standard.

Not at all... The BSW sub upgrade can be installed regardless of having the stock sub. At first, I thought it seemed a bit pricey, but when you factor the included Punch 200.1 amp, Punch EQ knob, high end cabling, and custom enclosure... it's the best setup you can buy given your goal of being cost effective.

OK, I'm thinking the best way to go is get a sub and an amp to run it and that is the bass sorted.

Then put the BSW door speaker package in and then that's the speakers sorted.

But being a standard basic stereo set up in my X5 I don't believe that I have an external amp to run all this door speakers (i may be wrong). Will I need one and what is the best way to go about it without having to be an electronics engineer or pull the whole car apart?

Thanks

I just installed a 10" sub using the Essam (SP?) system/design as posted here many many times in other threads, along with a rockford punch 300/2 amp and the stereo now sounds amazing....

@dcashion - sorry for not replying sooner... with the BSW speaker setup, you won't need a seperate amp. Factory amp will power just fine. The BSW sub setup comes with its own RF amp.

I love my system and am 100% satisfied with my purchase... This is coming from an audiophile that has discerning taste when it comes to both car and home audio.

Good luck!
