JL Cleansweep, options for better sound

Seems to be a lot less custom stuff going on in the X5 forum than e46 world. I've got a bunch of gear to take out of my M to put in the X5. What's everyone doing as far as aftermarket headunits? I have NAV and thinking of doing a JL cleansweep and going with aftermarket speakers, amps, and subs...

Would like to hear and see options of what you guys are doing out there.

The cleansweep takes line level inputs, flattens them out and converts them to (I think 5v preouts) It could be 7v...I forget.

The downside with going to an aftermarket head unit are you can lose integration with the steering wheel controls, and you can also lose the ability to control the on board computer functions. These tend to cause people to shy away from replacing the head unit.

There's some information in the STEREO section of the home page that you may want to look through. If you decide to do something different, we are always looking to add more info as well

Well, yes and no..on my M I got the adapter, SWIX one...still got my steering wheel controls..I gave up Bluetooth and Roadside assist, but was OK with that.

I'm looking at the gear I'll be pulling outta the M and figuring out the best way to go about doing the install. I wouldn't mind keeping the stock NAV headunit if the video quality and sound would be OK..I'd really like to get a dvd player up front for audio dvds too..I'm searching thru the audio forum now trying to see what my options are.

What was the cost on the wire adapters and harnesses you needed to do that?

No cleansweep! Nooooooo! Full range balanced outputs! Don't need to waste $400 on a flat non-EQd signal!

Not a fan huh? It definitely seems the easiest route. Actually, if double DIN would fit in dash w/out cutting the HVAC ductwork I'd do that. That's what I did in my M and I don't want to cut up anything in the X. I like the new Eclipse w/NAV and internal hd. I'm amazed at the difference between this board and the e46fanantics site's stereo forum. I'll have to do some more research. The stock radio is OK, but you lose or don't have a lot of features and flexibilty. I don't have DSP I don't believe...would that have a button like the HK systems in the 3 series?

DSP systems have the sub in the right rear corner. That's an easy way to tell.

Think what you want, but any X5 owner buying a CleanSweep is wasting not only money, but precious space.

The Clean Sweep can be defined in a block diagram as a speaker level and balanced-line LOC, a digital EQ that auto-adjusts to make the input as flat as possible, an aux in, and a line driver with a volume knob.

The volume knob is intended to be used with systems (like the VW Monsoon system or the Acura TL) which actively change their equalization drastically with volume (in that case, taking all the bass out). The BMW systems don't do that in the HU... they might do it in the amp, but if you are bypassing the amp, you don't need it.

It seems ungracious to keep complaining about the forum, frankly. There are many forums out there and their strengths are different. The Audio and Electronics forums on bimmerfest and bimmerforums are VERY different, for example.

The biggest difference I notice on this forum is that there aren't a lot of stickies, so you need to search for what you're looking for. I don't get that you've done that yet.

At my shop, we had an X5 owner for a customer a while back, and I found everything I needed about doing a very clean high-fidelity upgrade using the OEM HU here on xoutpost.com.

I just had to look.

You can bypass the OEM amp, get 4 channels of full-range un-equalized sound, and run those into any balanced-capable amp or into various other means of going single ended (my personal favorite is the Iso-Max CI-2RR).

It's not that hard.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't mean that in any bad light at all, definitely not complaining. Meaning on the other board there's a lot of kids w/daddy's money and set their cars up for maximum bling! Over here..I don't see that to be the case.
