Nav Issues

Well i've been having spotty NAV for the past few days.
Basically it pretty much works sometimes and sometimes it doesnt work (it just says please wait a moment) and it does nothing.

I just upgraded the software from SW4-1/12 to SW4-1/80. I have a 2002-1 map dvd. (not sure if i did it right, but i followed the steps on this forum) and the update took about a minute only.
After the update, i put back the map dvd, and it just says please wait a moment.

Now...could the weather cause it to not work? Its been quite foggy lately.

i'm gonna search the forum to see if i can DL some newer maps.

thanks
franklin

Your problem is nothing to do with the OS upgrade - it is a faulty/scratched map DVD. Try breathing on it & wiping with a cotton handkerchief. If that fails, pop the DVD into your PC & use Alcohol 120% or UltraISO to burn the DVD image to your HDD, then burn a new DVD+R or DVD+RW from the HDD image using Alcohol 120%.

This may sound peculiar, but your BMW DVD reader is much more sensitive than any PC DVD drive.... I guarantee that your PC will read the disk! I've been playing around with BMW Map DVD's for 15 months.

My MKIV will not work well at all with a counterfeit disk. I own a 2006-1 disk, but I prefer to use a backup copy in my car. I have made multiple copy attempts with very high quality media on two different Sony DVD burners at 1x speeds. I have tried all of the techniques on the forums, but my MKIV still crashes somewhat frequently (once every couple of weeks, or so), with a copy in the drive. It almost never crashes with an authentic map DVD in the drive.

Before you worry too much, try buying the latest authentic disk and try that.

Thats an easy answer. If you buy the BMW Professional Satnav option in the UK it is approx £2000 (US $4000) for the factory fitted hardware. Then BMW (Navteq BV Holland - Owned by Siemens) issue a bi-annual map dvd update via BMW for £200 (US $399) - An utter rip-off. It is released in March & November each year - but not issued under warranty - you have to spend $798 a year to stay up to date! The maps are not up to date on release & despite continued requests to BMW they do not contain a Speed Camera database - unlike the TomTom & Garmin sytems. This is very important in the UK & Europe where our extremely corrupt Governments are pulling in millions of £'s a year with £60+ camera fines!

"Counterfeit" disks are as good as the originals in my experience over several disks that have been created with UK & European Speed Camera databases added & tested by myself. Don't mislead the BMW community...................

I agree with you that the subscription costs, update frequency, data content for our BMW disks are frustrating. BMW co-creates the disks with Navteq by specifying what database extras they want added or removed, etc.

However, I strongly disagree that a copy is equal to an original. All you have to do is a few quick searches to find dozens of posts on this and other forums about problems people are having with copies. I am a computer expert, and I have pulled all the tricks to make copies with all kinds of different parameters. My MKIV is totally consistent with performance that others are seeing-- it is far more stable when reading an authentic disk than reading a copy. My MKIV is stable enough with a copy, but it is far from perfect. Maybe the tolerances of the MKIV lasers are just on the edge of the specifications, so it will read a production DVD just fine, but copies with their slightly different behaviours give the MKIV trouble.

I am very passionate about the BMW community, and I am not misleading our community in any way by pointing out the fact that DVD copies are at the root of many MKIV stability problems. That is the fact. To the contrary, we would all be misleading the community if we did not point out that DVD copies can be problematic. Maybe the problems are localized to the way that an individual made the copy; however, I have seen enough examples of copies made by some very smart people that do not work well 100% of the time, and that points to a general compatibility problem. You have had good success with your computer and your MKIV drive, but that is not universal.

just got word from the dealer...they said the NAV is having issues and somewhat running in an open loop. Said needs to be replaced @ $3k...and its not covered by CPO.

Any way i can dispute this? I just bought the car and it has been spotty as soon as i got it. I have to talk with the sales manager tomorrow on this...as they said the car was perfect!!!

any other ways i can go about this?

thanks

That might be a tough case, but it will depend on your relationship with the dealership. The CPO warranty classifies the nav computer as an "accessory," and the CPO does not cover accessory components. I was pretty ticked when I first learned this. (Essentially, an accessory is just about any electrical item not essential for vehicle operation.)

You could try another operating system downgrade and upgrade to see if that kick starts it back to life. If not, the worst case scenario is that you could end up buying a used MKIV from somewhere like eBay for about $750. They are easy to change out yourself, and that would save you a couple grand.

Brian's right. Before you even consider spending $$$$ disconnect the power to the Nav computer for about 20 mins then reconnect & try it. If no good, try loading your previous OS, try the Map DVD & if it works upgrade the OS again. You have nothing to lose if you are seriously considering buying a new Mk IV.
