If you burn the firmware onto DVD, you may have more success. It is possible that the CD Laser in the drive is dead or mis-aligned. Other than the bad disc issue, this can be the other reason for locked-out MK4's.
I too had a stuck CD many moons ago. Actually it was a CD-RW and was faulty. The procedure Galaxy quotes is correct - wait for the cd to stop, release and then quickly press the eject button again. Be quick to grab the CD when it pops out though as they sometimes go straight back in
