Nav boots are as follows:

Warm boot: occurs when nav is still active. Nav stays active until the databus in the vehicle becomes idle. After 60s of idle databus, the nav shuts down.
You can oberserve this process (and time it with a stop watch if you like) by leaving the trunk open and shutting down the car. The red LED on the nav goes off 60s after the car goes into its idle state.

Cold boot: this is when the splash screen is displayed. Occurs when the nav starts up after a full shut down.

To force a cold boot, turn car off, close all doors windows etc and wait 60s. Observe the red nav LED at the same time if you want. Once LED has gone off, nav has totally shut down. A cold boot then occurs.

When the nav boots from cold, it re-starts everything.

The only thing that changes by waiting longer is to let the nav cool down if it is hot.

Thanks, I will download the current OS and see if that helps. I was hoping V29 would do that when I downloaded it and installed. maybe the fault was on both.

Fix a new DVD mechanism, which you can puchase for a good price here:

Hello, my MK3 (6yrs old) and my wifes MK4 (5 yrs old) are both behaving this way. Nav locksup intermittently, or when hot, or randomly saying please insert disk. I've tried new maps on both but it hasn't helped.

I'm guessing the lasers on both are dying.

I'm trying to figure out what my options are. Can you tell me if this is right?

1. Buy a new laser for the MK4 from that website € 59,00, and a new mech for the MK3 (can't find just the laser for the MK3). Would I need the CDM-M2 or CDM-M3?

or

2. Buy a new mech for the MK4 and a new mech for the MK3. But which one MK4 would I need: M2 5.6/31, M3.5, M3 4.6?

Is that your website? Do you know if they ship to the US? Would you mind helping translate to English? Thanks!!!!

I'd agree with you.

You forgot

3. Buy a 2nd hand complete nav

4. Buy a brand new nav

That completes the option list I believe.

That website has nothing to do with me whatsoever. I've never spoken to them. I'd suggest you ask them directly. And I don't speak Dutch.

There is, these days, no excuse for not being able to understand websites in Chinese, Arabic, Bulgarian, German, Dutch, French, Italian, Greek, Hindi, Polish, Japanese, Russian, and many more languages...
You just need to use the right tools.

With those tools you have perfectly understandable email communications.

Sigh, I think I may have the same problem, my SatNav has also been locking up, 'freezing' but the car is a 2004 with 'only' 32000km ?! I would have thought that a DVD laser would last a little bit longer...

Anyway, I've made it worse... Yesterday I upgraded from 29.1 to 31 and everything worked for about 20min, the upgrade completed, the SW version was updated, everything was fine until I drove to work this morning, the SatNav "rebooted" twice, then froze.

After I turned the ignition off/on the SatNav option has now disappeared from my menu and the screen has a very weird look, it's blue and the menus (Set, Television, On-Board Computer) look different to what they used to...

I'm going to try and re-flash v.31, failing that, go back to v.29.1, failing that disconnect the battery, failing that, visit my local BMW dealer and sob...

Fixed...

...at least the problem of the SatNav not being available. I left the car (off) for a couple of h. So I assume one of those "cold re-boots" occured. I have noticed this myself, that if you leave the ignition off for a couple of minutes then the MK4 "powers off" so I guess this happened and the next time I switched the ignition on the MK4 came on again.

I'm going to try and re-burn my navigation DVD to a better brand disc to see if that helps with the "lock-ups"

When I used my original navigation DVD I didn't have any problems, or at least I didn't notice any, then, when I recorded a disc, the lock-ups started. However now, with v.31 SW, when I got my lock-up this morning, it seemed to corrupt the MK4 and a re-boot was neccessary.

Anyway, as mentioned, I'm going to try recording to a better disc on slow speed and if that improve anything

The difference in level of optical signal reflected from a burnt disc compared to an original disc is huge.

The original disc reflects much more light, because the reflective coating is much much better (almost perfect).

Thus an original disc is ALWAYS easier for the laser to read.

If you use recordable media, the quality of the reflected signal varies a lot between media. Some work well, some are terrible.

If your current brand of media is not working well, try switching to another brand.

The well known expensive brands are not always the best!

Of course, BMW always request you to use original BMW discs, never copies.
