My girlfirend just purchased an 2004 X5, 3.0i that was set up to have a navigation system. The issue, is that she unknowingly went through the purchase without checking the navigation system ( i know, i know...), and when I checked it out, I found out that she is missing the navigation module in the back and the cd changer, and it seems like who ever took them out, cut the wires to do so. Current Issues: 1. I'm trying to find out what is the best way to fix those cut wires (the nav unit and cd changer) 2. Once I try to purchase a MK4 unit, what are the most important things I should make sure (compatability wise) to check for so that I don't buy the wrong unit. I will try to upload pictures in the next 24 hours. Thanks for the help. |

That stinks, but it is fix-able...
You can buy the replacement plugs from BMW. Or, it might be easier to get a navigation harness, and then just cut the plugs off an existing harness and splice the wires together. Then, you would just have to match wire colors to put it back together.

Thanks Brian-BMW. Do you know where I can purchase the navigation harness?

1. I'm trying to find out what is the best way to fix those cut wires (the nav unit and cd changer)[/QUOTE] Go to a wreckers and cut the necessary connectors of a wiring loom. Make sure you have more than enough cable slack so you can make a good cable join in comfort. To join the wires, join them colour-for-colour by soldering and then fitting heatshrink tubing. Of course, you need to slide the heatshrink onto the wire before you join it, and the heat shrink needs to be far enough down the wire so it won't shrink when soldering. Hence you need som good 10 inches of cable slack. Quote:
To code or program the nav, you can either use a dealer ofr use my NavCoder software. If the dealer charges for coding, you may find using NavCoder is cheaper - especially if you can find a friendly forum member in your neighbourhood who has NavCoder and can do it for you. |

Thanks Kiwijochen! I will look into where the wreckers are here in my city. In regards to coding or programming the nav, if I can obtain the Navcoder software, is it as easy as poping the disc in?
I will update once I look into the wreckers. |

I'm looking around for an MK4, and I came across this on ebay. Would this be okay? I noticed that the seller is also including two cables, a blue and red one. Those are the connecting harnesses I need right?

That's one of the oldest MKIV units (like mine), early P/N. Those look like the plugs that go to it. To bad someone cut the wires instead of pulling the whole harnass.

You connect the laptop to the car's ibus with a homemade interface or one purchased from www.reslers.de NavCoder can be downloaded here: http://www.bimmerboard.com/members/k...l/NavCoder.zip |

Make sure that MK4 is a early one (12-02). If it's working good en runs fine with new software it's of course no problem.
But you can get troubles in the future. Maybe you must search for a MK4 from 2004-2005..... It's weird in the first place; a '02 MK4 in a '04 X5....
