Put in the refurbed DVD drive and still getting the same errors. "Please wait" or it can't read the DVD... Well that was $100 down the drain...

Any ideas?

On edit: Got the factory nav disc from home (I'm on an assignment away from home now) and it works when the copy of it doesn't (i.e., when it is hot out). Ok, looks like I have an idea as to what the problem is...

I just got a Sanyo SF-HD4 lens off of eBay and find that it has a different ribbon cable pigtail on it in that the connector is at an angle. In addition, it came as part of an assembly with the positioner motor and spindle drive, but I could take the lens out.

Question for this group is, do you think I can use it in my Mk 4 drive even though the ribbon would have a bulge in it from turning the connector to align it with the connector it plugs into?

Or, I could return it for a refund and eat the return shipping cost and go order a proper one for a little higher price.

Thanks for feedback.

I know that there is a laser unit with a different ribbon cable but I never tried this kind of laser unit.
I think it will not work because there might be a mechanical problem during the laser unit moving.
I would recommend to send the unit back and order the right one.

Regards from Germany.

My DVD won't read the OEM DVD disc anymore. But It reads the v32 CD just fine.

Which of these drives do I need? - http://navigatieonderdelen.nl/

You're in NJ. No reason to NOT do this:
RealOEM.com * BMW E46 330i Navigation computer drive

Took about 10 minutes to change. Piece of cake. You just need a T9 torx driver...

So I order 65839237706 from my local dealer for $500, swap it, return the old drive, and get $400 back from them?

Exactly. Although some dealers won't bother with the core and will just charge you the $100.

Can always order from www.getbmwparts.com also. Its $100 on their website.

Z4 Sat Nav DVD replacement help please!

Firstly thanks for all the interesting posts - in particular Didi's great intro to the process of replacing the DVD. Like many others I bought a 'backup' 2011 upgrade with maps for my 2005 Z4. The upgrade CD worked fine but the system would not read the maps DVD (but would read my original 2005 OEM version). The guy who I got the discs from directed me to this forum. So today my SM DVD-M3 4.6/88 unit arrived (I bought it from Navigatie Onderdelen a part of VIHH) and I figured I'd have a go at replacing it.

Unfortunately I'm stuck at the first hurdle. Didi says, "To open the MK4 you cut he seal at the back and remove the top cover carefully"

I'm at a bit of a loss how I get to the seal at the back. I guess through the boot by removing the back panel somehow? I guess though he is refering to an X rather than a Z? Does anyone know how to remove the unit in a Z4?

Also do I need to disconnect the battery before I start?

Many thanks..

1. Yes, absolutely disconnect the battery
2. You need the radio removal tool:
Amazon.com: OTC 7575 Ford Radio Removal Tool: Automotive

Can get them at any AutoZone...

Thanks Sna77. I'm based in England so hope I can find the radio removal tool somewhere here. I think Halfords is our AutoZone. I'm a bit worried about disconnecting the battery - are there any risks in doing this? I read somewhere (but forget where) that the alarm may well still sound and/or some of the electrics might not re-set correctly which then requires a Dealer visit.

Should I dismiss those concerns?
