Help Installing DVD Reader

I have a 2005 e46 m3 with a mkiv nav system (production 10/04).

My DVD was not reading the nav disk so a purchased a new DVD reader. The part number of the new DVD reader is: 65839373195.

I have tried all day, but I cannot get the nav system to work. My nav screen is blank and the dvd is stuck in the unit. I am not sure what I am doing wrong and am hoping that someone can point me in the right direction. Any help would be much appreciated and may also help a fellow enthusiast down the road.

My biggest issue and the likely cause of the unit not working is my lack of knowledge as to where and how to reconnect the ribbon with the blue tip. The new DVD reader is slightly different that the original reader and I am lost. I am also concerned that all my fiddling with the blue tipped ribbon has damaged it?

Also, is DVD reader connected properly, but not working because of the stuck nav disk? Is there an initialization process that I am not aware of?

Pictures are below. Any thoughts, guidance or insight would really help. Thanks all!

Can you circle or draw on the photos with your questions. Try watching this video

If that thick cable that you think you ruined has the conductors touching other conductors, chances are you did ruin the cable. each of those conductors Should not touch one another.

When I changed my DVD drive about 2 years ago I bougt a
BMW part number 65 83 9 273 194

Even if it is marked with DVD-M5 instead of DVD-M3 4.6.
This drive works perfect.

So I am a little bit confused about the part number you bought...

The drive itself is connected with two cables.
The one with the red connector.
And the ribbon cable.
To connect this ribbon cable you have to open the connector first (see second picture in my DIY). Then you can insert the cable and close the connector.
The MK4 does not need any re-configuration. It should work immediately.

Regards from Switzerland
Didi
