Nav is non-functional on e46 325xit Pls Help
Nav was functional when car was purchased, but after wife left key in pos 1, the battery died and the nav hasn't worked since. I still have full functionality of the OBC including altitude and GPS coordinates, but the map no longer pulls up and I receive a perpetual "please wait..." message when trying to access the map. I had an independent dealer look at it and he hooked up an OBDII reader but was unable to fix the issue. He said he had never seen anything like the problems that I had with my unit. An oddity that was noticed was that the small Nav symbol in the upper right is only partially visible as it is half off the screen. I thought that perhaps updating the firmware would fix the problem, but unfortunately, I have had no luck through this process. Unit is MKIV with 4-1/12 software. I tried updating with the IMAGE.CCD file but the unit rejected that as unrecognizable. Subsequently tried to update to firmware KrisL V-29 but nothing happens when inserting the CD into the DVD drive. I have seen recommendations to update to an older software version, but all the links that i have tried seem to be dead. If anyone has any suggestions or advise I would greatly appreciate the support. I did use the search function first but was unable to locate the specific information necessary to remedy my issue. Thanks in advance for your assistance |

Does the rest of the radio work besides the GPS portion? Or is the screen totally dead? I'm assuming you've checked the fuses...
I've seen a DVD drive get shorted out before with a dead battery... If you have a friend with Nav in his BMW, try borrowing his MKIV drive... You can pop the drive out with the ford radio removal tools (available at any auto parts store)... |

Everything else is functional, radio, OBC, etc. It is only the GPS that is non-functional. When you try to engage it you receive a "please wait..." message that never goes away.
Good suggestion on swapping out the drive. But BMW's are pretty rare in this area and the chances of finding one with navi would be slim. thanks for your suggestions and offer to help! |

OK... Sounds like your MKIV drive is definitely the culprit.
This is what I'd do... - Buy a legit v. 32 upgrade disc from BMW for $15. MKIV's are terrible at reading burnt DVD / CDs. If that disc is recognized / upgrade works, you can... - put a legit DVD in and see if you start tracking again... My guess is the unit is either toast or in a weird state. Order the upgrade disc asap and see what happens... Tischer BMW www.getbmwparts.com has it for cheap. Part # 01590141891 RealOEM.com BMW E83N X3 3.0i BMW CD/DVD miscellaneous |

MKIVs rarely die and burned CD OS discs usually work fine. You have a unit which has never been updated! You are on the VERY early OS. I think you just need an update. MKIIIs are the ones which die from sudden power loss. True the disc is cheap at the dealer.

There have been 8 or 9 updates since then, which seem to have never touched your nav Current version is 4-1/100 (It's a loooong way from 12 to 100...!!) The fact that your nav cannot read a map may be due to old software and new map, so the very first step is a software upgrade. You'll need a V31 or V32 disk, the $15 deal from the Dealer is a cheap way to get an original disc. The other advantage of the software upgrade is new features such as 3D view and improved graphics. If the nav still struggles to read a map disc, then the laser may be old / weak / dead. In this case a new laser is required (requires electronic skills to replace) or a new DVD-drive mechanism (very easy to replace) Quote:
You cannot simply copy the ISO image file to a CD. I use ImgBurn from The Official ImgBurn Website - it is free and very good. All the OS versions can be found here: GREN.RU - Прошивки для Нави блоков БМВ |

BTW you need to burn an OS image onto the cd, not just copy the IMAGE.CCD onto a blank cd, the nav unit won't recognise the ccd file. Use imgburn to "open" the ccd image and then burn onto the blank.

Updated the software today, it took the update fine from the BMW CD. But no luck in fixing the issue. I still get the "PLEASE WAIT ..." note when I try to access the GPS navigation mode. This is now intermittent with an error stating that the CD/DVD is unreadable.
I am thinking that the next step is most likely to replace the navigation disc. I am checking eBay and finding that there are quite a few CD's/DVD's out there. Which is the best upgrade for a MKIV? |

Your drive is finicky and most likely needs a real DVD... I think 2007.1 and newer is fine with the v32 update.
$70 for a legit 2007.1 High DVD: 2007 BMW 5 , 3-Series M3 Navigation DVD High 2007.1:eBay Motors (item 170331896791 end time Jun-12-09 10:48:32 PDT) (be careful with this auction... The picture shows CCC (not the high version), but the auction says high". Verify that the seller has the wrong picture up... 2009.1 High is the latest. $200 from NAVTEQ Maps and Traffic Good news is... If you buy the DVD and its toast, you can easily sell it for what you paid for it... Actually, you'd need it for your replacement MKIV...
