Problems with my MKIV
Hi all,
First of all I just wanted to say that I'm a total newbie when it comes to navigation systems, updating and issues with them. I've been reading through a lot of the posts here to try finding someone with a similar problem, but I haven't found it yet. I'm probably going to ask a lot of stupid questions in this thread, but please -bear with me...I'm just trying to learn ![]() Ok, here it goes; Recently I've been trying to upgrade my navigation system from a MKIII unit to a MKIV unit. The car is a -02 M3, originally delivered with the MKIII unit and the 16:9 screen in the dashboard. I bought a MKIV unit on ebay. This one came from a crashed X5. So here is what happened; I disconnected the MKIII and installed the MKIV. After installation I only get a light in the eject button on the MKIV unit, no red light in the power LED. When i turn the ignition on, I get a custom splash screen (X5 picture with bmw logo). The main menu looks more or less the same as the one i had with the MKIII with the exception of a few things. I now have a telephone menu, and i also had a second new item on the menu (which i can't remember what was - the menu is in german), but this one has now disappeared after a few on-and offs with the ignition. This is where is get stuck, and this is what I've tried. When in the main menu, I can't go into the settings menu. If i do, the navi computer freezes and i have to turn ignition off and wait until it powers down until i can get back in again. If i turn ignition on before the unit has powered down i only get a menu that looks like an early windows version (created by something else than the navi computer I assume). The hidden settings menu doesn't work either. My first thought was that i have a unit with corrupted memory (since there is no red power LED "on" on the unit). From reading other threads on this forum I've seen that somebody was able to get the unit "back to life" by updating the OS. I've tried this. With burning both the v.031 and v.032 on both cd's and dvd's (in case it wouldn't read one or the other). No success. I've also tried to alter the files in the HEX editing program to see if it would load then. Still the same. When trying to load a new OS the following things happen. Following the instructions given on the forum here - when I insert the OS cd or dvd nothing happens. I've waited 15 minutes and if I try to enter the navigation menu then it tells me that there is no navigation cd/dvd in the nav unit. If i then turn ignition off, let the unit power down and turn the ignition back on again, it recognizes a software cd/dvd in the unit. Again, the menu is in german, so I'm going to write whet comes up on the screen; "Software - CD im navigationsrechner. Software wird geladen". And that is about how far i get. It doesn't come up with any progress bar for loading the software - it just stays like that for 20 min+ If i then turn ignition off and take the cd out, the unit goes back to what it was like when I first installed it (X5 splash screen - normal menu). There is no software number in the upper right corner of the screen. I've also tried the CD map i have in my MKIII (as I've heard it should also work on the MKIV), but it doesn't recognize any CD/DVD map in the unit. ![]() So, is there anything really basic I've missed? Is it so that the unit won't let me enter the settings menu unless i have a map DVD in it? My gut feeling is that the memory is corruped and that it needs a re-flash, but hopefully you guys can enlighten me? |
