Radio mute for garmin gvn-53

I am trying to connect the garmin gvn-53 to my 2010 x5. I am trying to connect the mute switch wire somewhere where the radio will mute when the garmin starts speaking. Does anyone know where I can tap that wire to?

TIA

Buy a telemute lead and do it properly mate, you can then power the garmin from the car and mute the radio and amp the nav output to the front speakers.

$20 (£10) off ebay will get you one, you will just need to adapt the Garmin/telemute lead to splice then together (easy peasy mate).

Also the job is self contained, no hacking at wires and easy to un-install.

Telemute is a good call, although they don't contain an amplifier, and must be driven at speaker level by the nav, which will then feed you car's audio amp.

Alternatively, as the car is a 2010, maybe he can use the NAV audio pins and get fading audio?

EDIT: Or will he need NAVBUS?

Hmm, yes thats an option, I think you could be right, using the the NAV audio input would be a neat trick...

AFAIK the nav audio (out from nav computer), is just a line level audio out and the radio module pipes the audio in on top of the cars audio out.

The problem would be that non nav cars don't have the attenuation volume control (nav voice in relation to background audio source), so it would not mute as such, but if used in conjunction with the telemute it might work.

The thing would be if the mute also mutes the nav input as well (when not used in a OEM nav environment).

Hows the project coming on Bob?

Good point. Although such a late car may not have the traditional BM54 based setup where the souce unit is replace for adding nav. It's not something I know about. The WDS would be a good start.

I was wondering if a NAVBUS event or an audio detect was occuring to mute/merge the audio. Seems moot now.

When a call comes in MUTE goes low, pausing playback. TELON goes high, switching the audio to TELNF+ and TELNF-. If you have a mute kit and a nav instruction comes in, it will disrupt whatever is coming from your headunit, whether it be CD, FM or Bluetooth.

My recommendations are twofold. First put the nav instructions through only two speakers, the front or the back, that way you get a mix of CD or BT with the nav instructions. Second put a 10k resistor in series with the new MUTE line to limit current flowing into the nav from the Bluetooth and damaging it.
