Adding aux input

Hello All,

I logged on here for your NAV section. Tons of great info here!

I have recently retrofitted a MKIV Nav in my 98 touring along with the OEM Aux input to connect to my Zune.

My problem is that I cannot get the AUX to come up on my 16:9 screen. I have read that I need to hold the "mode" button for a while.....but that does not work for me???

I don't know if it matters, but I have the low instrument cluster (I plan to upgrade latter)

Any ideas would be GREAT!

A 1998 car does not have an Aux In capability unless you have a radio module fitted which is a new-gen flat-pin radio (made after sept 2001)

Additionally, not all the early NG radios have Aux-In capability.

Have you got the Aux-In cable wired to the NG radio correctly?

I am using a BM54 with the retrofit wiring harness. It has the small connector (AUX) behind the widescreen monitor. I purchased the OEM aux harness and connected that to my Zune. I'm positive that the connector is attached properly, but the system does not recognise the AUX has something connected?

Thanks for the help or any ideas......

Of course, you must check the Aux-In cable is physically plugged in to the radio tuner in the boot.

If it is and it still doesn't work then the BM54 might be too old.

AUX should appear when the cable harness is connected, regardless of whether a device is plugged in to the vehicles Aux-In socket.
The cable harness has the trigger (a resistor) that the radio detects to determine if the Aux-In harness is connected or not.

The BM54 is from an '03 model.....
I'm positive that the connection behind the monitor is correct......

I'm going to look at the connection to the BM54......from what I remember, there was only two main plugs that my retrofit-harness plugged directly into.

I did need an adapter to plug my retrofit harness to my existing radio harness.....it looked as if there were some open slots for additional stuff??

Thanks again KiwiJochen, I'm sick of listing to the radio

BM54 without AUX IN option

I have the same problem in my ECE E46 Touring 4/2001 , so according to KiwiJochen it looks like I have the old version of NG radio .

Because of ULF-Bluetooth retrofit I retrofitted the NG radio with OG-wire-harness-to-NG-radio adapter (which I added the AUX IN home made adapter in) as well and the NG BM54 radio I used is

65 12 6 922 510 - RadioBMW Proffessionnal, TMC supplement

ETK shows - 3rd generation of radio, produced from 9/2002 to 12/2002

I rebuilt and replaced AUX IN adapter twice thinking I soldered the adapter poorly. So, maybe the radio does not support this input? Roy, Jochen?

Is it possible somehow (e.g. radio FW update ???) to enable this input for my radio version or should I replace the whole (pretty expensive) unit for a newer one? Anyone?

TIA, KamilFKH

Sorry, I fell asleep at the keyboard.........

Here is all the info on the BM54

65 12 6 919 078
EC 121
KW 27/02
Beckers
BE 652625140561

I was told that it was removed from an '03 model.

If I do have an old version BM54....what is (next) the best way to fit a AUX to my system (I also have a analog TV tuner).

Thanks again!

I have a list of 23 BM54 P/Ns. I think the first 3 may be round pins. Yours is No.6 so it should be OK for the flat pins but I don't know the other features of the radios. Anyway yours is one of the older ones. Jochen I'm sure knows about the features. Here is my list from a couple of years ago on bimmerboard.

Here is a listings of all Euro type trunk mounted radio P/Ns.

Goto an electronics store that sells resistors and find a 220k ohm in either 1/4 or 1/2 watt and push it into the wire side of the harness between the left and right channels. I can't find the write-ups now, but people have learned how to make homemade aux input cable for under $10 US. The resistor is needed to fool the radio into knowing that the aux cable is there, so maybe youre radio just needs more resistance in order for it to realize that the cable is in fact there. Sorry if i'm confusing you, so just follow the link below. It should help you w/ your problem
