Will the dealer recode the unit free of charge since I have messed about with the operating system?

The INFO and SELECT Buttons doesn´t work. Your MK4 is gone to the OEM Mode. Also the Assist-Menue is going out, the VIN Number is lost and the vehicle-type is 7´er instead of 7´er limousine.
You must contact your dialer and code the Mk4 to your car again. Or you can send a special string of bytes over the i-bus to code it manually. But therefore you must know the byte-construction of this string.
This solves these Problems.

What are the functions behind Info and Select in Navi-Modus? I have an X3 and if the radio is on, I can hit Info: shows TP and Nav-Min.

I have never lost this function while down- and upgrading.

Select?

Thanks.

best,

e.

This issue mainly happens when you are running the old style BM24 radio, with a MKIV Nav computer. If you're running a BM54 radio with the flat pins then it's fine.

There this problem appears mainly on the Pre2002 cars that have had the Nav computer upgraded.

This is a good explanation, exactly my configuration:
BM24, MK4, Pre2002 (11/2000)
This would also explain the different statements of different people.

Thanx sos528i !

That is my setup for my 2000 740i. I also lost my INFO & SELECT button functions when I upgraded to V26.09a. But, by going back to V20 (or V21, I've read), then back to V26, you re-gain your INFO & SELECT button funtions. Mine is fine now.

EDIT NOTE: My nav system was already in Euro mode (no accept screen, yards instead of feet....) so, going back to V20 & then to V26 again wasn't an issue for me. Just be aware that going backwards, then back up again does put you in Euro mode.

Does this also cure the problem with the ETA being calculated strangely?

I lost the RDS details and the info button stopped doing what it did prior to the upgrade. I found that if I reinstalled an earlier version with the radio switched on and just before pressing ok to reboot the nav system, I switched off the radio by pressing the vol button and switched it back on again, then pressed OK to reboot, the info and rds were ok afterwards.
I then upgraded to the version I wanted and did exactly the same radio off / radio on and all was ok.

Not sure if this will help...but does no harm.
This does not fix the ETA issue which I have so I will get it recoded when its due for service soon.

You don't have to use purely version 20, just a lower version should do the trick...
