How's this for a problem.
 

I'm locked out of my safe. The Sargent & Greenleaf combination lock dial just spins and spins and I can hear a screw that fell off rattling around. The dial is not engaging any of the tumblers. There is no way in except to get a safe technician out to take the lock apart and possibly drill it out. :angryfire If that doesn't work then I think I'll need a big can opener powered by oxy-acetaline. It's not a El Cheapo safe/lock either so it is secure... too secure.

At least if I can't get in, no one else can.

Hey Kev,

A piece of advice. About two years ago I was in the market for a gun safe. Something that could fit a 12 gauge classic and a couple rifles. I did some extended research and discovered that spin combinations (which is what I was looking for) is the "safe of the past."
- If you were to go to a safe retailer, not a gun shop or sporting good store, but a true "safe warehouse" you will find, they don't sell "spin combinations" anymore. Reason 1) they are not as secure as a electronic NUMERIC combination lock. Reason 2) they are not as convienent as a NUMERIC electronic lock.

- I was very surprised to find out that SPIN was an inferior product. But after doing a bit of research, learned this to be true. In addition, if someone tries to enter a combo that is wrong, after a few tries, the safe will auto lock for a number of hours, preventing any tampering.

- of course there is no safe that is unbreakable, it is a deterrent. A good lock buster can get through anything.

- So, my suggestion, have a Safe Doctor come out and bust open that spin. While you are at it, have him replace the SPIN with an electronic key pad. It is harder to break into and much much easier to use, you can also set your pin.
It is an expensive upgrade to retrofit, (I think about $600-$800) but well worth the cost, especially if you are in and out of it a lot.

I agree and my next safe will have an electronic lock but I bought this one about 10 years ago when electronic locks were rare if ever seen. I will not upgrade this one because it's not worth it. I might as well buy a new safe, which ironically, I had been thinking about doing last week. :tsk:

Bummer! - What about the warrantee? - sounds like a defect - how long have you had it? - You will be surprised how quickly a locksmith can get into these things - Makes you wonder just how 'safe' is the safe.

he said he bought it 10 years ago... doubt if there's a warranty on that..
