Actually,

That happened to me once on 95 North in Providence...two knuckle heads where racing in and out of traffic, one in a 95ish Ford Taurus and the other in an Acura Integra 93 or 94..any way the Ford makes a mistake about 150 yards in front of me and hits the curbing on the far right and over corrects to the left shooting across traffic clips a semi with the left rear qtr and goes spinning into the Jersey barrier, meanwhile I am in the high speed lane going about 70ish watching this unfold. My girlfriend at the time let out a scream so loud my ears rang the rest of the night. I was under control the whole way in the 93 Nissan Maxima we were in and immediately was worried about what was behind us...for some reason I was calm enough to hit the hazzards at the same time the Taurus hit the wall...LU we stopped no further away than you did! Luckily there was alot of room between me and the next car behind me. I think the hazards helped.

The driver of the Taurus was ok as he had a seatbelt on, but the passenger did not and hit the windshield.

I can still remember my heart pumping and my knuckles being white. People stopped to help, but were pissed because they were racing and they let the state tropper know it too.

Hey all.

I don't want to hi-jack the thread, but as a relatively new X5 owner, I haven't had the same success with quick stopping. I am coming from a 2001 325 where the brakes were just fantastic. I saved myself from more than a few accidents with the amazing stopping power of the BMW.

Anyway, I know the X5 weighs about 6000 lbs in my configuration, and clearly there are going to be some differences between the 3 series and the X, but there have been a few times where I just felt like the brakes were not performing as well as many of you have stated in this thread. FYI, I have a 2005 4.4L.

This vehicle is a CPO and they did replace the pads, rotors etc under warranty before I got the car, but that was almost 2 months ago.

Do I just need to stop being a puss and hit these brakes hard? Maybe I'm just being too gentle. This has been the biggest change from the 3 series to me.

Any words of wisdom?

Thanks,

Rob H

I haven't driven a car in quite some time. My first truck, SUV, SAV, whatever was a 1992 GMC Jimmy. I can't very well compare the stopping power of a 3 series to that of the X.

This was my first TRUE brake test. Have I had to brake hard before, sure. But this was it. This was my first real panic put your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye stop. I still can not believe I stopped. I felt as if I still had momentum and although I slowed considerably, I should have hit him.

I gained a new respect for my baby :) I always knew she could go, but I feel much better knowing she can stop.
