This thread has been very helpful. I'm actually looking into the SD500. Costco has it for $349. They also have the SD550 for $399, but the only major difference I noticed was that the screen was 2.5" instead of 2"... I also have a digital Rebel and this would be a nice, compact, extremely portable solution for all my "quickshot" needs.

You will want the 2.5" inch screen. It makes a HUGE difference, especially when viewing/sharing pics with the camera.. I paid $371.99 for the SD550 at NewEgg, but their price has gone up now to $388.99. Still better than Costco though. Let me know if you have any questions about it.

Some options for you:

Buy.com has the SD400 for $260 with free shipping. Costco has the SD400 for $270 including shipping. Costco has the SD500 for $350 including shipping. Costco has the SD550 for $400 including shipping. Costco also has the SD450 for $310 including shipping.

Which one you choose is really a matter of how much you want to spend. $50 here, $50 there, it all adds up. If you don't mind spending $400 I'd get the SD550. It's a bit bigger than the SD450 but not hugely so. If that's the camera you want, get it from Costco. All of the places I listed are in CA and since you are in CA, you will pay sales tax with any of them. The price from Costco and Newegg works out to be the same but with Costco, you can return it to any Costco store and Costco's warranty/return policy is very generous.

I have the SD400 and I've been very happy with it. I am however, getting the SD450 because it is now the same price as I paid for my SD400 less than two months ago. I am going to return my SD400. For the same price I get a bigger LCD and some better features. I bought both from Costco.

This camera has a "stitch" mode. This is 3 pics "stitched" together. You can stitch together over 20 pictures if you want.

SG: Cool backyard scene...hope I'm not Jacking your thread, but your "Stiched" photo gave me impetus to fiddle and stitch a "backyard scene" I had shot last Jan 2005. I'm still fiddling with the stitch/pano mode and I have realized that focal lenght/settings have an impact on the final pic. NEway, I enjoy seeing pics on the board, :D
