EMail via Norton Question:

Hi Gang... Way OT.

I'm stumped: my new 'puter here in FLA runs like a top, except for a new glitch in my ability to Send Email from Outlook Express. Here are the low/no tech details of my situ:
-When I hit Send/Recieve up on the OutEx top bar thing, it allows the emails to pour in.
-When I want to send an email and hit that same "Send/Recieve" tab, I get this:

"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'asapgroup.com', Server: 'smtp.comcast.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F"

I know that the list of poss. causes is std bs. It also deposits the email that I want to send, in the Outbox.

To get around this, I hit Send/Recieve to let emails run in and be "clean", then I hit my Norton button in bottom toolbar, disable it for a second, hit send again, and the email goes out.

I have toggled around inside my Norton for days, looking at all the diff tabs and settings and menus and configurations until my eyes ached. I still don't fookin get the fix.

By the bye, imo, their Help link yields pages of FAQs and stuff that are near mind boggling. I've never had a product from a company that is impossible to literally "contact" like Symantec appears to be. (Not looking for your fave "other" AntiVirus to "solve" this prob.; Norton has always worked for me and it did work "until"...)

I have Norton 2005 AntiVirus, etc., which heretofore has worked fine. I had changed Nothing in the weeks since this 'puter was orig. fired up. One day, it just started "doing this". I update LiveUpdate regularly, run the scan, blah, blah, blah.

Are there some "5 easy pieces/steps" I can fiddle with to let email go out normally like it used to?

I have about given up. I just don't get nor can find the "fix" to open up the email Send Door.

do u by chance have system restore operational?
if so, u could restore to a point from b4 this started
happening and maybe get a sense as to what "live
update" killed ur machine. if, in fact, it was even a
"live update" that did it.

I thought one of the reasons for having the fookin Norton or McAfee, et al, was to scan incoming emails,

What a Catch22 situ.

I may live with the unhandy method I currently use to "send out" email, rather than disable the send part, permanently. As it is, I disable it for about 2 seconds, and re-enable it while the email is being scanned, Outbound.

Weird, but nothing surprises me, in terms of 'puters, programs, etc.

These suckers make the OBS and DME in our cars look bullet, fool and glitch proof by comparo, imo.

I think this sums it up:

At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated: 'If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon.'

* Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, reliable, five times as fast, and twice as easy to drive, but would only run on five percent of the roads.

* The oil, water temperature and alternator warning lights would be replaced by a single "general car default" warning light.

* New seats would force everyone to have the same size butt.

* The airbag system would say "Are you sure?" before going off.

* Occasionally for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key, and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

* GM would require all car buyers to also purchase a deluxe set of Rand McNally road maps (now a GM subsidiary), even though they neither need them nor want them. * Everytime GM introduced a new model car, buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again, because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car

It took me quite a while to figure out how to shut down my computer when I first got Win95! "BRILLIANT!" Push START to STOP! Sometimes I'd like to shoot those software guys.

In the CAD program we use at work the buttons for placing a model view in a drawing are arranged in a cross like this:
Front View is in the Middle
Left View is on the Right
Right View is on the Left
Top View is on the Bottom
Bottom View is on the Top

I hate Norton. Norton has caused so much grief for me and my support team. If a client calls and says "things stopped working but it was fine yesterday" it's usually because they installed Norton. Never had any problems with McAffee.
