New York to Niagara

Guys

I'm flying into NY for a few days with my son next week. We are staying in central Manhatton, but also have a room booked at Niagara for one night.

I was going to hire and drive, but based on the fact that time is against us I've decided to fly from NY.

I've looked on the internet and can go from Newark NJ to Buffalo then a cab to the hotel for around $200 return (for both of us, not each). A couple of questions:

How far is Newark from Manhatton by Taxi?
Is this the best airport to fly from?
Does the cost seem OK?

Thanks for your answers in advance!

Depending on where you stay in Manhattan, Newark Airport is only about 20 miles or so. What time is your flight? Rush hour is tough and can make the 20 miles well over and hour to an hour and a half. I do think Newark is your best bet, alot easier to get to than JFK or LaGuardia.

Although I haven't booked them yet I think there were seats available around midday.

Can't remember the airline so I'll have to look through the internet again!

Midday is good. Still make sure you leave plenty of time to get to the airport. You never know with NYC traffic. Better safe than sorry.

Make sure you rent a 4x4 in Buffalo, they get some serious lake effect snow up there, you never know what you'll be landing in.

Just out of curiosity, with all of the places that you could take a day trip to from Manhattan, what's the draw of Buffalo/Niagara falls area?

I absolutely don't mean to flame America at all with this post. That's what i wanna say first.

Secondly, my message.

If you're going to Niagara Falls, make sure you spend your day on the Canadian side, because that's where all the flashy restaurants, hotels and casinos are.

No meanness intended. It's just that I pass through Niagara Falls about twice a year, and the Canadian side always has about 4 times the buildings, restaurants and such. Just honest reality.

You should check out the attraction where you go through a tunnel and get behind the falls. It's on the Canadian side, and it's a damn scary experience.

Agree....Plus, driving over the Canadian side is no big deal....Just make sure you can get back to the US.

The trip kind of happened because last year we were taking my kids (from my first marriage) to the South of France. Jon broke his leg about 2 weeks before we were due to go and as we were driving 900 miles (in the X5) I really couldn't see any way he could either make it or enjoy his holiday once down there.

The decision was made to leave him behind with his Mum - the most difficult decision I have ever made......

To make it up to him I presented him with tickets to NY. As Niagara was close I thought he'd like that as well. I've only been to Niagara once and it is impressive to say the least!

We are staying in the Ramada Plaza & Inn - New Yorker Hotel (hope I haven't made a mistake here!) and then in the Marriott Niagara Fallsview on the CA side.

I plan to fly to Buffalo and then take a cab to the hotel. Staying overnight and back to NY for Saturday, going to see a show in the evening or something similar and flying home Sunday evening for Monday morning.

He's pretty excited about the trip and I think we'll have some fun together.

Going to show him all the sites, helicopter over NY, all the stuff. However any suggestions as a 'must do' would be great.

I really liked the Intrepid air museum in Manhattan. Your son might like that - they even have a Blackbird up there on display.

Once in Canada, you can also take a helicopter tour of the falls. They also offer a jet-powered boat ride along the Niagara river. Alternatively, you can take one of the "Maid of the Mist" rides in a larger boat that actually drives right up to where the falls "fall". Crazy experience.

Bring dry clothes, cuz you'll get soaked on most of the funnest attractions.

Had a look at the website and it is on the short list!

Any other ideas?
