I just hope that the ones being cavalier are the ones being affected the greatest. On the bright side, maybe the US population's IQ point average will go up a few ticks after the smoke clears. People die all the time for all sorts of reasons and when we hit 250,000 deaths it will still be only .08% of the total population. That will probably take over a year from the time this started so we are not losing huge swathes of the population. Here are the CDC's 2017 stats for leading causes of death for context: Heart disease: 647,457 Cancer: 599,108 Accidents (unintentional injuries): 169,936 Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 160,201 Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 146,383 Alzheimer’s disease: 121,404 Diabetes: 83,564 Influenza and pneumonia: 55,672 Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 50,633 Intentional self-harm (suicide): 47,173 All of those together are less than 1% (0.63%) of the total population. US society is in greater peril of failing from many other causes before covid-19. Poor parenting and education being chief among them in my book.

We can definitely do better. And we must. Americans are susceptible to the influence of media hype. The greater the number of positive cases, the more perceived damage it becomes in the eyes of the public.
People starts to panic, businesses continue to close, many more for good, financial ruin, then social unrest and protests followed by rioting and looting. This pandemic has caused much more financial harm than physical harm. We will come out of this weaker financially than many countries. That concerns me. An America with a perceived weakness will bring out the hyenas of the world. Everyone will want a piece of us. Not the right time for protectionism and nationalism. IMHO. This is the time when we need the support and our allies. Join efforts to fight this disease. So we are not perceived as the loner who went at it selfishly without regards to the wellbeing of the world.

Strange that Austin doesn't list "attending" a protest or riot...

Regardless of what has happened in the USA, the buck stops at the President. That's not to say trump has responded to this crisis effectively or ineffectively but he is directly responsibility as to how any national crisis is handled and the outcome.
IMO, his actions have been incredibly, amazingly, blatantly irresponsible. Trump has minimized and appealed to his base to act as if COVID 19 is no worse than the flu and that the Democrats are blowing it out of proportion to hurt him. He has made it a political issue. I don't think there is any question that he believes the cure is worse than the disease and that casualties are acceptable. He has claimed many times how good a job he is doing based on the original estimates of two to three million deaths. One million deaths sounds like much better than two, certainly three. And it won't get near one million before the election so open everything ASAP, he can BS his way out of however many die by then. Republicans in leadership, for the most part, have based their opening plans on restoring the economy, heads up his #@$. They have no yet broken from party lines and followed the WHO and CDC recommendations as an opening plan. If they don't they know Trump will chastise them and attempt to destroy their reputation and political career. Add to that the contingent of Americans that lack the intelligence to understand or are ignorant of what freedom means or are just angry and defiant by nature and we have a recipe for catastrophic failure. I think we are still in the first wave giving the second wave a huge kick start.

I agree. It’s a double whammy. Faced with this unprecedented pandemic and having the most incompetent and corrupt douchebag for our president.

I can't stand Trump. But I can't stand politicians. So nothing really changed for me when he was elected. The only thing that will change after Biden is elected, which is looking more and more likely, is that hopefully our potus will be less embarrassing. But the same corruption and quagmire will persist. As it stands, the governors are more to blame for the current pandemic situ. And they should be voted out as Trump will probably be. But keeping the focus on him screwing up will let them slide under the radar. I want them held accountable as well.

Trump abdicated his one chance to unit the states under a common goal, and played the blaming game.
I think his unwillingness to lead the states forced each of them to fend for themselves, which resulted in 50 different strategies to fight this pandemic. Which in turn led to disaster.
