Intel Core Solo/Duo on laptop or not?

Sorry about all the OT computer questions lately, gang. I just know there is a very knowledgable and helpful bunch of computer folks on the board.

It was mentioned previously that Intel Core Solo/Duo processors on laptops are having a problem (too new technology, sucking battery life on laptops?) Many of the laptops I'm configuring on Dell are pushing the solo/duo processors. Should I get one with one of these processors or stick to a Pentium M?

Stick with a hyper-threaded pentium at most.

and do youreself a favor and stay the hell away from Dell laptops. You might pay a bit more for a Thinkpad, but you'll pay more for the dell in the long run in time spent on the phone with tech support.

I have a thinkpad 600x, t41 and t43 and have had zero problems will all 3 (they're also my company standard, the entire sales force and executive staff have them). Check out newegg or buy.com for lenovo thinkpads, I think you'll be happier in the long run.

Dual Core offer more power and should be better. IBM is offering them so I would think its ok. But I don't know if its worth the extra cost. Dell always tries to get you to buy the newest and higher priced item.

I would by a IBM and pay 20% more for it.

that is an amazing price for that machine.... if I weren't typing on 1 right now I'ld snag that in a heartbeat....

I have also had problems with Dell Laptops. What else besides IBM is considered reliable - HP, Toshiba? What about MACs?

My 14 y/o wants a new laptop and I have a $1K limit - less would be nice.

IBM R series... check out newegg or buy.com, they have specials all the time, just search on thinkpad. Sorry, I just don't trust other laptop manufacturers as much as IBM/Lenovo right now.

That's a good price! I've been using a T41 for 2 yrs now. They are built very well. If you look at benchmark tests, they do very well and at the same time lead in battery life.

Dish out the extra $200 and get this. It's really doesn't get much better of a deal. btw, this is still the IBM design and not the new Lenovo one: this one is def the one you want.

AND stay away from Dell!

I would think that $234 over your limit is worth it, the IBM T is light and thin. Its the best real IBM.

Things I would think about for a 14 year old are:

1) Does he want to use it for games, probally need a graphic chip then.

2) Get buyer protection, my 17 year old just spill milk on her T43. IBM sent a box and it is being fixed. Man I am glad I got the coverage.

Toshiba might be a good may to go, they are bigger and heaver but have graphics at a lowwer price, would also look at a Dual Core Acer. Look at the CompUSA add for this week. http://www.compusa.com/products/prod...36978&pfp=cat3

I didn't see that it was was your 14yo. An R series would easily suffice then and would easily be under 1k. They're also good machines.

I'll check into that Lenovo. I had been looking primarily at HP's since I've always had good luck w/ HP's, and they seem like they're built well, esp. for the price (many in the $1k neighborhood, although mostly Turions).
