anyone from texas? houston?

putting a feeler out there to figure out what its like?

what do you like, what don't you like? would you live there if you had your choice without consequences/constraints...

i know real estate is dirt cheap but you have 3% property taxes, everything is pretty flat and open, and its hot and humid (ugghh)...

also there are 3 race tracks nearby with another 3 in easy travel time...

may be looking at relocating soon...

I live in the Houston area and have all my life but if I had a choice it probably wouldn't be Houston. I'll agree with the flat part but not necessarily open. It depends on the area you are in. You def got the hot and humid part right. Houston can be a decent place to live depending on when you live/work. I'm more than willing to give you any information I can soooo just let me know if you have any other questions. oh... tax rates can vary pretty widely depending on the neigborhood you choose.

Check out a neighborhood called the Hills. A friend of mine lives there- most of the homes are older, a lot are being/have been remodeled, lots of mature trees and BIG detached garages

I have the MLS site bookmarked somewhere, I'll edit this when I find it, Adam.

Say Hayaku, I've lived in Diego, and was raised in the Chicago area. Houston is definitely not those places. I think it boils down to economics and your personal interest. The weather is great if you like HOT. It takes about 2 summers to get climatized. As far as the cost of living, it all balances out. Property tax is higher here, but we don't pay state tax. I still believe you get more for your money here than you do on any coast. Let me know if you have specific questions...I've been here for 12 years now and have a real feel for this Hot Azz place ........Phil

Anyone can deal with heat. It's the combination of heat and humidity thats the killer. I lived in Austin most of my life, great place, hot, but not as humid. I travel to Houston fairly regularly, and man, I can't deal with it in the summer time. Especially if you have to wear a suit!

I attended graduate school at Sam Houston State U. in Huntsville, and worked in Houston, circa 1980-82 (before you were born, Adam ).

IIRC, my time there coincided with some sort of oil-related downturn in the economy. The locals talked about the "River Oaks" section of Houston with very high regard.

But what I remember most is the heat. And the humidity.

x5Monkey is in Dallas. He might have some current info., also.

River Oaks is great if you have millions like the Enron boys DID........ That's primarily the old money neighborhood of Houston.... sits just on the edge of downtown.

There is def a plethora of places to eat of all price ranges and styles.

and most importantly...... 6 area BMW stealers for those fun visits
