Sanguru said it best in one of his posts a couple of weeks back. If fuel prices are driving your decision to buy a new car, you need to consider that the financial outlay for a new vehicle may be more than differential return you'll get at the gas pump.

If you NEED a new car, because the old one is getting tired and worn out, by all means, get a new one.
If you WANT a new car because you're sick and tired of driving the old one, by all means, get a new one, if it makes you feel good.

But if you're simply trying to offset the price of gas - think very carefully about your decision from a purely economic standpoint.

Personally, I don't see one car on your list that is going to have a significant fuel consumption decrease over your existing 330ix. What are you going to save - 1 gallon of gas per fillup? $3.50 per tank at today's prices?

Keep your 330ix and buy yourself a Civic SI or some 30 MPG sporty econobox to putt around in. When the 330ix finally gives up the ghost, buy yourself the nicest, plushest, high performance car you can afford for the special excursions.

After looking over your list i don't think any if those fit your requirements. Perhaps you should consider the following. None of these are exciting except the vet and I don't know how it got on the list. But your list dosen't seem pratical given your requirements. Honda Civc is also missing from that list. Thats one of the problems.. Today I went down to Tulley and drove around the lot and they didn't have a single E90 with nav. I'm going to be going to college soon and Nav is something I'd LOVE to have.. I agree about the Japanese options.. They may handle/perform as well, but they don't feel as well engineered. There's something about Japanese cars that just doesn't leave you feeling as warm as a German car would. I drove an X3 about a month ago and I loved it. It handles great, gets pretty good mileage, etc.

It's not that the 330xi gets bad mileage.. I average about 25mpg. I just drive so much that the car is already old. It has about 93,000 miles on it.. It had 45,000 or so when I got it in January of 2005. It's starting to feel old.. It's rattling, things keep breaking.. it doesn't feel as tight on the road as it once did. It'll have over 100,000 miles by the time I get rid of it. I'm just looking for new cars that get good mileage because I drive so much and I'm going to need a new car soon.

I'm not buying a car purely on the basis of its mileage. I want a nice, fun car.. But gas mileage is much more of a concern than it was last time I got a car. That's one of the reasons I'm looking at the 325 instead of the 330, and the A4 2.0T instead of the 3.2... Both have good power, but get good mileage at the same time.
