"One day Brer Fox thought of how Brer Rabbit had been cutting up his capers and bouncing around until he'd come to believe that he was the boss of the whole gang. Brer Fox thought of a way to lay some bait for that uppity Brer Rabbit. He went to work and got some tar and mixed it with some turpentine. He fixed up a contraption that he called a Tar-Baby. When he finished making her, he put a straw hat on her head and sat the little thing in the middle of the road. Brer Fox, he lay off in the bushes to see what would happen. Well, he didn't have to wait long either, 'cause by and by Brer Rabbit came pacing down the road--lippity-clippity, clippity-lippity--just as sassy as a jaybird. Brer Fox, he lay low. Brer Rabbit came prancing along until he saw the Tar-Baby and then he sat back on his hind legs like he was astonished. The Tar-Baby just sat there, she did, and Brer Fox, he lay low. "Good morning!" says Brer Rabbit, says he. "Nice weather we're having this morning," says he. Tar-Baby didn't say a word, and Brer Fox, he lay low. "How are you feeling this morning?" says Brer Rabbit, says he. Brer Fox, he winked his eye real slow and lay low and the Tar-Baby didn't say a thing. "What is the matter with you then? Are you deaf?" says Brer Rabbit, says he. "Cause if you are, I can holler louder," says he. The Tar-Baby stayed still and Brer Fox, he lay low. "You're stuck-up, that's what's wrong with you. You think you're too good to talk to me," says Brer Rabbit, says he. "And I'm going to cure you, that's what I'm going to do," says he. Brer Fox started to chuckle in his stomach, he did, but Tar-Baby didn't say a word. "I'm going to teach you how to talk to respectable folks if it's my last act," says Brer Rabbit, says he. "If you don't take off that hat and say howdy, I'm going to bust you wide open," says he. Tar-Baby stayed still and Brer Fox, he lay low. Brer Rabbit kept on asking her why she wouldn't talk and the Tar-Baby kept on saying nothing until Brer Rabbit finally drew back his fist, he did, and blip--he hit the Tar-Baby on the jaw. But his fist stuck and he couldn't pull it loose. The tar held him. But Tar-Baby, she stayed still, and Brer Fox, he lay low. "If you don't let me loose, I'm going to hit you again," says Brer Rabbit, says he, and with that he drew back his other fist and blap--he hit the Tar-Baby with the other hand and that one stuck fast too. Tar-Baby she stayed still, and Brer Fox, he lay low.........." Sheesh, all this time I figured it was a made up word turns out it has a double meaning. I'm 35 years old and am still having my childish innocence chipped away

I, too, read the story as a child growing up in the West Indies, and was not made aware of its apparent racial connotation until I moved to the U.S. As others have said, this particular phrase (as do others), derives its meaning based solely on the context in which it's used.

I think that society is obsessed with political correctness and is too quick to villify anyone who says anything that might ruffle a single feather. It's so knee jerk nowadays it's just absurd and so-called minority rights activists are the first ones to pounce, like vultures on a fresh kill. Unfortunately, it usually for some gain seperate and apart from advancing societal awareness, fostering racial relations, or educating the general public. There is so much to be said for context and intent but there is no opportunity to explain it. Heck, it shouldn't always have to be explained.

Parker brings up the case where Disney had to pull their blockbuster and award-winning movie "Song of the South" because it 'offends' some people (years later, I might add) - "Friday Night Lights" also makes you think 'Which one is the racist?'

Wagner, unless your a person of color or ever been a victim or racism or discrimination you may want to stay away from this one. 100 years ago to put people in thier place and all you had was your pride and family name stuff like this was commononly used to degrade and strip a person of their pride and selfworth.
Why even go there as a public speaker? He would have been better off just going with what we all think "WHAT A CLUSTER FUCK THAT IS FUCKED UP BEYOND RECOGNITION!" everyone would have simply agreed. |

If indeed this statement is true (Some people would consider Tar-baby a racist term.) then perhaps if this person knew it then it would be a kindness on his part not to use the phrase. I personally don't believe it is being politically correct to avoid using certain words or phrases when someones feelings may be hurt. But as I stated in the Manhole thread folks need to get a life when it comes to political correctness in general.

See I don't really think it was meant as a racist term but none the less people do have a responsibility to be aware of their surroundings. I think other more known words thou like the N word of Faggot need to be taken extremely seriously because we ALL know what they mean to people and there for should bear no lee way, I as many of you know went to Pride this weekend in San Diego, and what should have been a great event was shattered by the beating of 5 defenseless gay men because they were gay and yes the word Faggot was spewed, I just find it disgusting that those kind of things (sadly characterized as human beings) still exist in the world, So its sad we have to deal with this but hate crimes happen and we have a duty to try and prevent them.
