Vin, your damed if you do, your damned if you don't.

If you mount it low, it doesn't pick up radar as well. And, you also don't get the benefit of the radar detection in the rear which will be blocked by your seats, passengers, etc.

Yes, it will still pick up laser mounted high. How do I know? It went off when a bogie lasered me. Still got a ticket.

Laser protection really only works when the bogie shoots a car in front of you within a limited distance. And lets assume the car in front of you was not speeding and he does not go after them. Well, now you know he's there because your laser went off.

But 9 times out of ten, by the time you know you've been lasered, it's too late.

As far as our X5 goes, we have a Passport SR7 system with the sensor in the bumper. Have gotten hit by laser numerous times with low and medium traffic while speeding. With quick reaction, the X is still ticket free.

The closer the detector sensor is to the bumper, the much better the protection will be as that's where they aim.

BUT since most of the times CHP (at least) uses Ka rather than laser, you're better off mounting the detector somewhere that maximizes RADAR detection rather than laser -- esp since, statistically, you're usually dead if you even detect laser -- it's kinda like mustard gas lol. That's the way I see it. Only annoyance with havingt the radar mounted up high is the freaking power cord ... not exactly neat and tidy nor inconspicuous in the least.

Is this in So Cal that you got tagged with laser? I've never gotten a "real" thread from cops using laser. All the laser detections that my V1 have picked up are from those darn Infinitis' laser cruise control and occasionally chevy blazer/tahoe/yukon's 3rd brake lights. All the "real" threads (at least in No. & So. Cal) are on Ka band.
