One other thing that is interesting. I keep telling my kids that they live in the information age, where they have access to stuff that would have taken weeks, if ever to reach us when I was a kid.

This thread proves that. It is just astonishing that news moves that fast now.

Scottie,

The sad truth is that the media has done an excellent job at desensitizing the American public and many have become jaded.

Please elaborate.

And, in doing so, please disband the following left-wing tactics and/or observe these rules of objectivity in the interest of having a fair and logical discussion:
  • Do not resort to rhetoric
  • Do not resort to hyperbole
  • Do not quote Michael Moore, Jimmy Carter, John Kerry, Al Gore, Bill Clinton, Nancy Pelosi (et al) or Zbigniew Brzezinski as sources
  • Use facts
  • Be rationale
  • Do not give me links to websites as if the website itself is a valid and an objective source.
  • Do not quote books you haven't read
  • Do not quote anyone out of context as a source
  • Do not flip flop
  • Reference Vietnam only if you know what the hell you are talking about
  • Address why oil prices are higher since our escalated activities in the gulf were (allegedly) for the sole-purpose of securing cheap oil
  • Try not to impose socialistic rhetoric
  • Leave capitalistic-rhetoric ("...the oil companies are making too much money...") out of it.
Now...Please...Do explain.

Well, this is going to be SUPER easy to explain simply by quoting my original post... which you must not have fully read. I bolded it this time so you can see it

Seriously though, just disgusting and words can't add anything to what happened. And the media should just leave the Amish alone like Wagner said.

For those who missed it, that was sarcasm in the first paragraph

Nobody ever made the claim that the sole-purpose of the war was to "scure cheap oil". The claim was made that the "war was fought for oil", but this had nothing to do with securing cheap oil for the American public.

Those who claim that the war was fought for oil are claiming that the oil companies wanted to take control of the oil resources of Iraq and so they used their enormous influence in our government to push the policy of war.

Only a fool would think this would result in lower oil prices for the American public. In fact, only a fool would think that this would result in any more of Iraq's oil being imported to the United States. Regardless of whether or not Iraq's oil is controlled by the large oil corporations, it will continue to flow mostly to Europe and Asia. But instead of the profits going to the Iraqi government as they do with the oil industry being nationalized, the profits would go to the large oil corporations.

But anyway, regardless of whether or not the war policy was pushed by the oil companies, it has resulted in total chaos for the oil industry and most of the oil companies have since pulled out of Iraq completely. And in addition, most of those in the Iraqi government have refused to even discuss privatizing the oil industry, and so it still remains nationalized and it appears it will stay that way.

In my opinion, the oil companies obviously supported the war policy, but I'm not sure how much they actually had to do with the decision to go to war. They were probably a large influence, but clearly not the only one.

To leave economics out of the discussion is to not discuss the essence of what drives 99% of political & foreign policy decisions by the United States government. The issue of oil in Iraq is obviously a socialist/capitalist issue (oil industry being nationalized vs. oil industry being controlled by private oil companies).
