Does anyone use an American Express card anymore?

I just got my November statement and Amex has upped the yearly fee to $85, and that's not including the $40 Membership Rewards fee. Costco is the only place I use it, because they don't take any other card. I'm thinking I'm going to downgrade my Gold card to one of the blue "no fee" cards. Does anyone know of any benefits of Amex anymore that I should consider before dumping it? I can't remember a situation in a very long time where I've said "hmmm, I would really benefit if I used my Amex for this purchase"

I use it out of habit so I won't stack up a lot of bills. You are right though, no obvious benefit.
Someone here has a Black AX.

I downgraded to a "Blue" card a year or two ago, and to be honest with ya, I haven't used that one much either. Unless you're getting a plethora of frequent flier miles or other rewards, the Blue card will probably do the job for you.

My green rewards card is $65 a year for two cards and I get tons of free items and travel each year with the rewards. Everything except my mortgage goes on that card. I have not yet seen any usable benefit of the other cards they keep trying to get me to upgrade to.

I have no annual fee on my Amex Platinum Cash Rebate card. The only fee is the costco annual membership fee, which is $100 for Executive members. I get well over $200 cash back (good at Costco only) every year so I think it is well worth it. If you plan to use cash at Costco, then I guess you don't need Amex. Otherwise, not much choice if you shop at Costco.

I was hoping for these types of responses.... I use a capitalone platinum 2 pts/miles for $1 spent for every other purchase but Costco so i'm covered on "gettin' some'n in return" type cards... Looks like the ol' Amex is gettin downgraded...

Thanks....

Had and used a Gold Card from '73 to 2000.

After pulling the ripcord, I let it lapse.

Just got an AX BlueCard and have been using that,
to let my Continental Airlines MC whither away.

With 1 Mill plus Conti miles, I don't "need anymore"
and the $65/yr was bs.

Diff'n strokes.
