Got AMEX Platinum and very happy with it especially when travelling abroad via NWA since I get to use their exclusive lounges... You get complimentary upgrade as well to Gold status to Westin's SPG program which I normally get a free room upgrade and late checkout...

We use that Platinum for free companion tix on flights to Europe. Amex still lets you buy event/concert tix before they're released to the public too.

We use the AmEx Delta SkyMiles card, and also get 2 FF miles for every dollar. We use it for everything (gas, WalMart, etc). Nice to be able to get FF miles for stuff you are already buying anyway.

I use my Amex plat for just about everything. I think of Amex as another insurance policy. For example, if you rent a car on your Amex, you get additional coverage.
If you buy a big purchase with your Amex, (or even a small one) Amex gives you an additional 1 year warranty on the item.
I use Amex travel services for booking trips and for getting late checkouts, etc.

-- Is it worth it? probably not. But I use it out of habit and because I feel I get extra protection with my purchase. Now granted I've never used their extended warranty but I assume it works well if you have all your paperwork in order.

I have used it for lost items within the 90 days of purchase a few times. Sending emergency funds a few times. The additional warranty has paid for itself on more than one occasion. The companion airline seat has paid off quite few times for business class tickets. Concert tickets as well has been helpful in getting good seats early. Fraudulent charges are removed instantly no questions asked and I have never had them come back and insist it is my problem. Overall I get value from the Platinum card.

I will soon be taking the same route as above! My wife complains that the AMEX is not accepted at a lot of places - even the cigar shop I frequent discourage me from using it - the AMEX or 10-15% discount on cigars.

I didn't know there were so many different AMEX cards. I have a gold, not sure the dis/advantages of it. My daughter was watching a special and saw that 'P-diddy' has a Black card. I assume that must be the one with all the 'exclusive' benefits.

I belive the Black card has a $2500.00 annual fee and no limit on spending and it also has a 24hr. concierge, and I heard there is something like 10,000 issued total

I have an AMX. But I don't use it. Only reason, I kept my AMX is that I can use it anywhere in the world. Yes, I can use MC or VISA. Some place in other country they prefer AMX. I wonder why. Most of time, I only use MC or VISA.
