The Amex black card does have a concierge. It does cost $2500/yr. It does give you extra benefits like free room upgrades, late check out, reservations in hard to get into restaurants, etc.
The concierge is pretty good at finding just about anything (no they will not find you a Rolex Daytona at MSRP or a PS3 for $600) but lets say for example you need to find tables and chairs for a party, you call them, they find it.
Yes, it is just a glorified phone book at times, but it also comes in VERY handy at times.

I believe you have to be invited into the program and this is done by having a one time yearly charge of $250,000. You do not need to maintain this spending, you just have to reach it once.
--No-- I do not have one.. But my business partner does and we use it all the time.

Another little known fact about AMEX, I don't know the exact paramters, but they are really there for you in case of an emergency. For example, lets say you get arrested. AMEX will bail you out of jail. This is especially important if you are oversea's and need instant help. Also, lets say your robbed and need cash, Amex to the rescue.

- So I am not saying that Amex is "all that" but it does provide some insurance and help features that are good to have.

I use my trusty Platnum visa...has never let me down no matter where I am traveling I hate using US carriers for airlines anyway and I don't have enough commercial national flights to put miles to use so that was never a draw for me. I have my hertz gold which covers my rental cars (and will deliver to regional airports since I primarily fly privately) and I have yet to find anyplace in the world that doesn't take visa if they take credit cards...plus as a business owner I hate amex because they charge another 2% over any other credit card company.

as for the bail out of jail thing and the emergency wire transfers...any platnum card has that feature regardless of type

I have the platinum and can say the following: the yearly subscription fee is killing me and its really not worth it. I just dont know why I haven't let go of it yet.

I do, however, admitt the following perks:

1st class lounges access even when travelling coach is a blessing, you can rest eat and unwind specially at congested airports where otherwise you'd have to roam around or sit on a chair and use common bathrooms.

renting a car- you dont have to pay for the insurnace they make you take if you charge on AMEX you just pay the rental charges only

insurance on luggage when travelling is also a plus if they get lost the airline pays you and AMEX pays you.

never reached my card's limit and dont even know if i have one! with the visa its like you shop and shop then suddenly it starts declining, AMEX will bail you out each time.

But yeah, none of the things i mentioned above is probably really worth that much money on yearly basis. Id say stick to the green one and that should be alright.

One perk of the gold card thats not mentioned is the free roadside assistance:

Car trouble can happen anywhere — even in your driveway. That's why Roadside Assistance Anywhere is now enhanced for Gold Card members. With just one simple call, you can rely on your Card to provide:

• Towing due to accident or breakdown

• Locked key retrieval

• Flat tire replacement

• Emergency fuel delivery

• Assistance whenever a Gold Card member is present

While other car clubs charge over $50 a year, this exciting new benefit is automatically included with your Card membership.

Learn more about Roadside Assistance Anywhere at americanexpress.com/roadsidehelp.

I have had a Gold Amex for over decade now and the only benefit that I have used it for is the Amex Best Value Guarantee. They basically refund you the difference if you buy something with it and find it priced lower somewhere else. They have changed their policies somewhat but I used it to buy an expensive digicam at a reputable place and Amex price matced it to some fly-by-night Brooklyn camera joint. Other than that, the added rental car insurance is nice.

I now use a Starwood Preferred Guest Amex to get points for hotel stays and use it in conjunction with a Exec Membership at Costco, which is the only reason I use Amex in the first place.

Does this program apply if you bought something in Euros with an Amex Platinum?

This thread is 3 years old but amex gold just
paid $400.00 deductible for a rental accident
for my daughter.

If there had been additional charges they would
have paid those charges as well. Thank you, Thank you.

Business Expenses and travelling. Other than that I use my B of A debit or whatever they give me with 0%.

They have been fantastic with dispute resolution. United (the world's worst airline) diverted my flight from IAD to PWM when we were 15 minutes out for no good reason (CFO's a pilot, sitting at the airport... they claimed fog) They shut off the lights at the airport on me back in DC, so AE took care of my bill at the Marriott (Hey, it was the closest one) and then reversed the charges on United, since three flights the next day were cancelled, and I hopped a ride home with a US Senator who lives in my neighborhood on another airline.
