Not a big suprise. That story was out before the draft last year, if it pans out that will suck for USC.

It's a crime that a college athlete doesn't get more than a scholarship or a small stipend. Universities make millions of dollars from NCAA sports and coaches' salaries are out of control.
Nick Saban, who had a losing record as head coach of the Dolphins is being paid three times more annually to coach Alabama's football team than Lovie Smith gets paid to coach the SuperBowl-bound Bears. Tha'ts f*#ked up. NCAA athletes are on to the money game and they're pissed about it. That being said, it's still against the rules to do what's alleged in the article Wagner linked here, but I hope this moves the debate over whether NCAA athletes deserve more than they're getting at present into the limelight.

I agree that athletes bring in big time money for schools, and I believe that they should be paid/compensated for it. But, you need to realize that only a FEW sports bring in the money (football/basketball). Do you just give money for football/basketball players? I've yet to see a D1 women's football game, so I'm sure they'll be Title 9 issues there. What about swimmers, track athletes, etc? Their sports bring in no revenue, but have plenty of expenses associated with it. Can you pay a 2.0 GPA offensive lineman while leaving a 4.0 GPA tennis player in the dark?
Personally, the NCAA is too stupid to tackle any of these issues, and even if they did, it wouldn't be fair to many. I don't see anything wrong with someone who wants to help their alma mater by giving them a car or money. However, I think they should give it to the athletic departments and have them split it equitably somehow (after all the bills are paid, of course).
