Continuing education is always good and can be very "area" specific. Of course most of the continuing exams for professions are simply to bring in revenue but, that is expected.

I think any profession that has people's live's in their hands, should have to be schooled and tested regularly.
Commercial airline pilots need to go in for training every six months. Why not: doctors, nurses, police officers, contractors, etc.

For positions that involve "standards", real estate, law, accounting, etc. It should also be neccessary, maybe just not as frequently.

And, despite what the elderly think about discrimination. I think it is negligent not to re-test drivers at certain ages. If it's ok to tell people under the age of 17 they can't drive and people under the age of 21, they can't drink. I see no reason why we can't tell people at the age of 65, that they need to be RE-tested. and then every 3-5 years after that. It's not ageism, it's common sense.
-- And I just want to add, in the event this sparks an arguement. I am not suggesting that the elderly "lose" their license at a certain age, unless they can't pass the driving test. They only "lose" their license if they are not competant to drive.

Interesting comment coming from you. I don't think some people can learn ethics. The content is there. Perhaps the personal application of the curriculum may be what's missing.

Maybe they have the same courses because some folks only go to the classes out of rote rather than learning and applying the information. This attitude is what causes some to lose their credentials and get fined for doing business without them. One thing for sure if it's the same information every 2 years then anyone taking that course ought to ace it every time.

The states' CE requirements are a necessary evil. Without them, the Cruise lines as well as resorts in the Carribean would lose income. On a more serious note, it is great to get together with old colleagues and see what is new in your particular field. Fullfilling these requirements in the Dominican Republic in January while the Northeast is covered by cold and snow is an added plus.

My CE credits are in less exotic locations typically. For example, I'm going to Philly this weekend for a seminar. That's ok, though. When I go to a seminar, I want to actually go to the seminar and not be distracted by wanting to be elswhere (ie, outside). Also, when I take vacation, I don't want to be having to go to a seminar. I prefer to focus on one at a time.

In today's society of law suit madness, protecting yourself as much as you
can would seem preferential. Education is always welcome. But the consideration of expenses should also be a factor. Maybe some of this could just be done on line. My 2 cents.
