Oh My God. I Can't Believe This Is Happening
Professional Data Recovery: $500-2,000 Get a new computer: $2,000 Get my data, plus a new hard drive: $500-2,000 + $315 Or just get a new Hard Drive: $315 They have not offered to cover any of this, even though the HD failing is their fault, b/c the HD was spinning just fine when I dropped it off, and if I hadn't dropped it off, an Apple update relased yesterday would have fixed my problems. (except my hard drive, but I was going to get an external hard drive anyways today, which would have been bootale. If I could trasnfer my data, of course). I have a pretty recent DVD backup of both iTunes and iPhoto, but everything else, like my Google Earth which I carefully spent hours adding placemarks to places on earth I've been to, would be gone, unless I can transfer it somewhere else with out my HD failing. So now, I'm going to try to rescue a few AppleWorks docs, and take screen shots of my bookmarks, ect.. and load them onto a flash drive. I am going to get a new computer, becuase I have already gotten my HD replaced once, so I presume it's my computer that's making it fail. I don't want a Macbook. Why? New ones are coming out later this year. I don't really like the 13'' horizontal display, and the gloss finish makes it hard for me to concentrate for long times. So I will probably go out and get a MacBook Pro. Any body have ideas on how to approach this to Apple? I'm going to call the Manager at the Apple store I go to, I know him and maybe he can help. If not, I'm prepared to write a letter to Apple Computer, and attach all my work orders, and see what they can do. I'm such in a bad mood right now, I had that computer since Sept. 2005, and have been adding to it every day since.

i think it's time for an upgrade.
as for the data, you still can pull info off the disk since what i'm thinking is that it's the hdd components and not the disk that failed. i don't think it's their obligation to pay for the hdd because you brought your iBook in for hdd problems. but it doesn't hurt to fight for it Quote:

I have a question though: will my DVDs transfer to my new computer, or does it have to be the same computer. I also heard that a new feautre of iTunes 7 is backwards downloading, meaning I can take everything from my iPod and bring it to a different computer. Can anybody confirm how this works?

you can transfer all your songs from you iPod to a new computer. you won't have the purchasing info though. all you have to do is to put iTunes into the manually manage your songs mode; if you don't, everytime you connect your iPod, iTunes' library will try to overwrite all the songs you have on your iPod.

It's not business software. It's the ultimate in consumer recovery software. Every Mac user worth his salt has it. And yes iTunes 7 does backward downloading. But why are you just hearing about this? If you follow update procedures you should have downloaded it already, and the update is what keeps you Mac in good shape. And yes IF YOU can access your previous Hard Drive it will transfer all your files including invisible one's which you cannot transfer manually.

Ok, I know it's not a business software, but what I meant to say it's a bit heavy duty for me, and I'd rather try to back it up myself, even if that means a fried HD. I have known about the backwards compatibility for a long time, and I do have it, but I don't know how it works. Do I just plug it into the new 'puter, but like Rabbit said, I think that it will ask me to start over.
Anyways, I just booted up the computer, and at the login screen it asked me to type in my name/password. None of the things I tried worked, they must have reset it. So I called, tech is on break, I will get a call when he gets back. I have a flash drive and several DVDs, so I can try to get info onto them. How would I go about doing that? Drag the Hard Drive Icon onto the DVD? Thanks, True

It's not backup software. It repairs your hard drive and give you the opportunity to recover lost files. Heavy duty is when you have to send a hard drive outside to get someone else to recover the files on your drive. As far as file transfers go when you get a new computer there's an option that allows to link your old computer with the new one and it will download the files from your old computer.( Apple may help in this case as a courtesy) But you must remember that downloading files from the old computer can be risky if your hard drive has not been repaired and the files you transfer are currupt. Thats why you use software that repairs your drive before proceeding. Anyway i wish you the best. Quote:
