I don't get what the big deal is besides the user interface. Everything that the iphone touts, other companies have already done. if you want a powerful phone, the HTC/Cingular 8525 will blow it away and it's faster. If apple comes up with a new toaster oven, are people going to go gaga over it???

good for my friends over at apple and my stock but it's hype and marketing...

I won't be getting on the iPhone band wagon this friday and you wont find me in line or beating the drum for all things apple either but it seems to me that even though there are a lot of phones that could be described as powerful, the problem with most of them is they aren't very easy to use.
Most people don't need a so called powerful phone. What they do want is a functional device. They just want to be able to use the features it has without having to go through page after page, sub menu after sub menu just to accomplish a simple task.

I believe user interface and ease of use is part of the attraction with the iPhone and therein may lie it's power. Weather it's faster or not is all a big guessing game at this point.

(iphone/8525)

Talk time: (8hrs./5hrs.)
Screen size & Resolution: (2.8"/3.5") (240x320/320x480) iPhone screen is 25% larger!
Memory: (4-8GB/51MB,microSD expandable)
Dimensions: (4.5x2.4x0.46/4.43x2.28x0.86) iPhone is 47% thinner!
Weight: (4.8oz./6.21oz.) iPhone is 23% lighter!

Big selling point for me is the user interface/simplicity/cool factor, and Apples more stable OS X compared to Windows OS. Sure there are some downsides when compared to the 8525 i.e. no 3G support or push email but this is currently aimed at non-business users, so not a deal breaker for average Joe consumer.

Given the choice, I will always opt for the smaller/lighter phone with the larger display!

I think this has to do with AT&T's 3g network. AT&T's 3g network is not nearly as large as Verizon's or Sprint's. Most AT&T customers, including myself, do not have access to the 3g network where they live. And I live in the NYC suburbs, not in some remote location. Verizon has had 3g here for over 2 years, Sprint for over a year, but the nearest Cingular 3g is about 20 miles away still. So for me, Wi-Fi is preferable to 3g.

No 3G is a deal killer for me. I did read somewhere that ATT might be able to offer 3G on iPhone with a software upgrade. How they are going to do it is beyond me.

Having said that, the iPhone looks pretty good. the big deal about the phone is the software and the UI.

I'm thinking that the iPhone (although a phone) is based on more of a laptop platform rather than a phone platform. That being the case, perhaps the 3g arguement may not be that important. Remember web access will be base on the OSX OS. How this will be implimented we will find out soon enough.

By now, most on-the-go workers have cut the cord by moving to wireless. Wi-Fi has become the dominant wireless Internet access method, embedded in nearly every laptop sold today. Older cellular services were just too slow for widespread Internet access, while it is true that 3G services like EV-DO and HSDPA have dissolved that barrier still Wi-Fi appears to be the dominate way to achieve internet access.
