So if I decide to keep this phone, then activate it, and a year later a better one comes out, am I locked into this phone for two years?

Are you ready to give up push e-mail? I didn't think the iPhone worked with MS Exchange or BBES.

I'm sure they'd "let" you buy the newer handset with another 2 year extension of your contract. That seems to be the way ATT has done things over the years. It'll be another $500 I'd bet and you'd be stuck with your 1st gen iPhone that you could try to flog on eBay I guess.

So, if I get locked into this two year contract.. Can I pay to cancel it?

Sorry for all these questions.. But I have the thing, sitting on my desk charging, and I want to be sure about it before I go through the steps of porting my number to a personal account, etc.

Cancellation will surely result in an ETF (Early Termination Fee, in their lingo). FWIW, if I were you and had the BB Pearl that you seem very happy with, I'd wait until newer version come out. You will never lose out by waiting for tech items. Prices will inevitably come down and/or the product will get better.

I hear ya Kev, and I know your right.. But I got sucked into all those neat little ads.. The thing is sitting on my desk and boy, is it pretty.
I figure I've got two weeks to give it the run around, lets see what this damn thing has got going for it. I can always return it.

As far as push email, I'm not sure how the email will work. I have a bunch of different email sources, hopefully they will all sync, no problem.

I'll keep you posted.

I was in the same position as you with a business account. I had to move one of the lines to my personal account and they happily activated the iphone using that line. You are stuck with 2 years yes..and there is I think a $175 ET-fee.
