I think you are right all laptops have a high repair rate and it is probably worth while getting extended repair warranties.

no they don't, and it's not worth it.

gresch,

I really don't want to get into a back and forth discussion on the merits and demerits of extended repair warranties but there is fairly common thinking that extended warranties may be worth looking at for certain products such as large screen TVs (I have one for my largest plasma) and laptop computers.

As far as laptops go, one needs to figure how long it's going to be useful for one though. I can't speak to Apple's products but if Windows is the selected platform, I think the laptop repairs are only worth considering for about 4 years before it makes more sense to replace them.

And i might add that if one were to agree that laptops have as much
trouble as some claim to have, a warranty is a wise course indeed.
And of course with Apple products you can ride the initial warranty all the way up until
just abot the end and buy the additional warranty no questions asked.

i'm not going to get into a back and forth... i've been in the IT business for over 20 years, imho, buying extended warranties for laptops are not worth the cost. There will always be the exception to the rule examples, but it is my experience that with Thinkpad laptops extended warranties are not worth it. YMMV.

Respecting your experience is what we're are about around here but from a consumers standpoint (talking about me) when your laptop bites the dust it's nice to know it wont cost you a dime to get it fixed. That goes for desktops as well. Got my 3 year old monitor upgraded free. Didn't even pay for shipping.

More that paid for the cost of the warranty......

OK, one back and forth from me. I've been the IT business for over 20 years too
Just wanted to add that if one does get an extended warranty it should be from the manufacturer. That usually also give the tech support that some find useful.
I do agree with you on YMMV though. Like you, I would not buy an extended warranty for a laptop. Mine would be bought from from Lenovo or Dell though...

Sorry to say that it seems that workmanship across all lines of products has deteriorated. Not to hijack the thread but we had heard about the nighmare refrigerators with ice makers were. Sure enough after 5 repairs that should have cost almost as much as the appliance it now works as it should. Cost to us?? Nothing. Why? a $109.00 warranty.

Lesson?

You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when youre sittin at the table.
Therell be time enough for countin when the dealins done.
