Cities cracking down on saggy pants

TRENTON, N.J. - It's a fashion that started in prison, and now the saggy pants craze has come full circle — low-slung street strutting in some cities may soon mean run-ins with the law, including a stint in jail.

Proposals to ban saggy pants are starting to ride up in several places. At the extreme end, wearing pants low enough to show boxers or bare buttocks in one small Louisiana town means six months in jail and a $500 fine. A crackdown also is being pushed in Atlanta. And in Trenton, getting caught with your pants down may soon result in not only a fine, but a city worker assessing where your life is headed.

"Are they employed? Do they have a high school diploma? It's a wonderful way to redirect at that point," said Trenton Councilwoman Annette Lartigue, who is drafting a law to outlaw saggy pants. "The message is clear: We don't want to see your backside."

As much as I hate the look, this is ridiculous... It should however be against the law for women to wear those low cut jeans with rolls hanging over them

I had a kid crossing the street in front of me one day with his big a$$ pants hanging. It was hilarious to watch him try and walk with a wide stance so his pants didn't fall to his ankles while doing so.

Baggy pants were SO 3 years ago. People just don't know when to move on

I don't think it's any government's job to dictate what citizens wear, but people seriously need to consider the fact that people don't want to see your a** walkin around on the streets.

I like the use of the word "crackdown" in the article. Pun DEFINITELY intended! L, what's even funnier, is when the pants are so low you can see his underwear in its entirety, AND he's wearing a belt!

I can just see the "Law & Order" episode now...

"Your honor.....as you can see from defense exhibit A, only 1 inch of my client's butt crack was showing, not the 2 1/2 inches required by the statute..."

How rediculous that politicians even have time to discuss this.

I think this 'style' is just silly, and a law to control it is even more silly.

A year or two ago there was a car chase caught on tape. The driver eventually jumps out of the car and starts running, while on the run his pants fall down and that's how the police caught him. I was sooo funny to watch him run and try to hold his pants up at the same time.

My theory:

Why? Because baggy pants are associated with gang activity.

How do they know this? Gang members fleeing police are apprehended because their pants fall to their knees and they fall flat on their face. Therefore a higher percentage of gang members apprehended have baggy pants.

I say make all gang members wear baggy pants.

Isn't this "somewhat" like the equivalent of mandating that women must wear a bra? Or cover their ankles? etc.

I think people should be able to walk around naked if it makes them happy.
