and somehow I'm rooting for Apple on this one simply because everyone that bought an iPhone signed an agreement not to alter the programming of the device during the contract period. So for those who would argue i should be able to do what i want with the phone i bought. Think again. The phone dosesn't belong to you until the contract period is over. So you hack it you get what you get. Quote:

This is a never ending game.
![]() You hack the crap out of your X5, your XBoxes, PS3, even the calculators...this is no different. It is only time. People who have hacked it are smart enough NOT to run the update. Apple loses a lot if they permanently lock out folks like me. This is to please AT&T more than anyone. Mr Jobs know how valuable the hacking community is.

It looks like the latest update only bricked the UNLOCKED iphones. Those that installed third party apps (using the popular install.app/apptap) only lost their newly added software and the update simply restored their iPhone to its original state.
I added special ringtones on mine using a third party software called "iToner" and they still work except that they simply disappeared from the ringtone lists. I could understand Apple's stand on the Unlocked iPhones because of their contract with AT&T but I think Apple should have left the third party apps alone. These apps were not hurting Apple anyway and it actually enhanced the functionality and desirability of the phone. I've seen these 3rd party software on my son's iPhone and they were awesome. I think this is where Apple will get a backlash from it's loyal customer base. My .02 cents. |

Hmm, what is the benefit of an iPhone again that a Smartphone can't do?
![]() And all those Apple folks that didn't like the big mean Bill Gates

Their position on 3rd party apps is kind of ridiculous. Anyone using the thing as more than just a fashion accessory is going to run 3rd part apps to get the most out of the device.

Bane of Apple's existence and why they lagged and still lag behind Microsoft. For some reason they want nearly everything to be 'Apple'.

And now that they're really popular, they're starting to reap what Microsoft has been for years - hackers (both good and bad). Apple's starting to feel a little "Microsoft" love, and if they aren't careful about how they handle things, it's only going to get more "lovely."

Oh wait, no it's not. They've been screwed up on their third-party policy since their inception.
