Ripping CDs To Computer Is Illegal
Washington (DC) - The Recording Industry Association of America has filed a landmark federal lawsuit in Arizona, claiming that it is illegal for users to make copies of CD tracks to their computer for personal use. http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/01/...er_is_illegal/

Heard that this morning, most BS thing I'VE EVER HEARD. So if you copy your own songs to your iPod, you've done something illegal. POS record companies need to get their crap in check.
Stop crying and while you're at it, stop charging 20+ dollars for a CD. I saw the old school Dr.Dre "Chronic" album going for $12.00........for a CD made decades ago...nice 'industry' they are worse then big oil.

The issue in NOT about how much money an artist makes. It about "Howell being also guilty of making "unauthorized copies" of CD tracks by ripping them to his computer, even though he may never have shared them with anyone else. "So then what are Authorized copies?" What does copyright law say???
Of course the suit is dumb and won't go anywhere but what does the law say? anybody know???

I have to disagree to the essence of the argument. If the artists/label didn't care about money and that wasn't the driving issue...why would they care one way or the other about people saving off their music and possibly reproducing it. All they are getting is free publicity from it...
They care because they lose money.

You never really bought the CD. You purchased the right to enjoy it but it still belongs to them.
Think homes and property taxes. You own the right to rent it from the government. The only difference is that the "industry" hasn't figured out a way to make you pay annually to keep something you "own." |

And with that logic, you never really buy anything...your computer, phone, car all on loan from those holding the copyright
