"I don't like the price of that new BMW, i'll just steal it, BMW makes enough money..." I don't have the energy to describe once again how the process works, but a CD costs significantly more than the materials used to manufacture it. Also, CD's wouldn't cost so much if people weren't stealing music. You all realize this, it's nothing new to you. But because you *can* steal it without much fear of consequence, you cry about the price as the justification. It's very simple psychiatry. Flame suit on.

You can't copy to your iPod a cd you purchased. Where exactly did you "steal" anything? I guess if you bought a BMW, then wanted to sell it privately and linked to BMW's site to give the specs on the car...would that be "stealing" from BMW?

I was talking in general, not specifically to the topic of ripping to a computer or ipod... sorry for confusion.

I agree with the record companies on this one (I know I'm one of the few). I don't believe buying a product gives you the write to duplicate it and use those duplicates any way you see fit (in the case of CD's often times selling the duplicates).
If you buy a CD you have the write to play that CD and even re-sell that CD (the actual CD purchased not a copy) if you like. Making unauthorized duplications is or at least should be illegal. |

When you bought the CD you didn't get title to the music, you got a license to listen to it. That license doesn't give you the right to copy it. Same situation as computer software, which is a better example than the BMW.

It's convient to copy a CD for your Ipod etc, but that doesn't make it right. If you buy a CD you have the right to use that CD not a copy of it. It's like buying clothes then getting a 'knock off' copy made so you can wear them to certain places where you where the originals to others. Unauthorized duplication of copyrighted material or work (clothes, music, art, purse etc..) is wrong. Regardless of how easy and necessary we may believe. |

Man I'm glad some of these opinions aren't the majority.
If you are not selling it, thus making a profit, anything you choose to do should be fine. If you want to take things 'literally' then all the posts on this board in regards to football have been illegal. In case people don't pay attention to the disclaimer during a NFL game, goes a little like this: "Any recounts of the game or use of images of the game without consent of the National Football League are [illegal]" So if you've ever, in your life, remarked about any NFL game...you broke the law....does that make sense?

You have conveniently taken the meaning of the word "recounts" to mean casual conversation. Recounts has multiple meanings and I believe that in this case it means "reshowing of the tv or radio broadcast" and I believe it also goes on to prohibit charging money for or making money on the recounting.
