This probably applies to about .0001% of the population - in fact probably even the X5 World population.

I already said that the GT-R was a better performance car as far as number are concerned, but I am not only interested in 0-60 times, or I would be driving a Mitsubishi Evo instead of my 94 325i. I just feel that the GT-R is inferior in every aspect other than performance when compared to the other cars. I wouldn't pay $80k, $90k, $110k for a car that could be the star of the next "Fast and the Furious" movie.
many of the E60 m5's were bought back by BMW. In fact, the first 6 that were sold through my local dealer were all bought back. at least 4 of the 6 speed manuals that I know of that sold through my dealer and here locally were also bought back.

My specific case, I went through 3 SMG's (couldn't get into reverse, TCU issues, clutch issues). My car which followed a strict breakin burnt a quart of oil every 500 miles. I also had EDC malfunctions, steering angle sensor replaced 2x (whole array of xmas lights), TPMS issues failures on 2 tires due to faulty sensors, and not to mention E60 m5 owners get an avg of maybe (maybe 8 mpg) for a total cruising range of 150 miles.

To add insult to injury, BMW knows internally that there are design flaws with SMGIII especially with clutch wear and reverse. My lawyers got ahold of the bulletin. My car was in the shop over 45 days in the first 4 months that I've owned it.

ArtZ8 who is also member here dumped his E60 M5 also due to driveability and issues.

If you also want to talk about resale, take a 95K E60 M5 off the lot and wholesale after a couple months will get you high 60K at the auctions. Need I say more??

So the M5 is not really overrated then as far as performance is concerned, you just happened to have mechanical and drivibility issues with your particular car, right? You experienced issues mainly with the SMG trans (which is known to be problematic) and the tire pressure monitoring system. That would irritate me too if I paid that much for a car, but I would have bought the manual, which is known to be MUCH more reliable in BMW's and avoided your biggest issue all together. I would think that the number of M5's bought back by dealers is not a significant percentage overall and I am sure that nobody is going to return the GT-R due to buyers remorse when they wake up the morning after purchasing it and realize that they have a $100k Nissan in their garage.

Also, M5 engines from previous generations have been know to require up to 1-quart of oil every 1,000 miles or so. This is not an issue that is new to the e60. We all know the M5 isn't going to save anyone any money at the gas pumps, but keep in mind that the GT-R is projected to weigh over 3,800 pounds, so if you are driving it as hard as required to get those great performance numbers then I wouldn't anticipate it to look like a hybrid when compared to the M5.

I will agree to disagree with you on this one. Go ahead and pay $100k +/-for a Nissan and enjoy it. I am sure you wont experience any problems or bugs in this car at all due to it being a completely new concept/model. I would also not anticipate any extended waiting periods with a loaner car while your GT-R is being serviced due to the dealer not stocking parts specific to the GT-R. It is a "limited production" vehicle after all and most dealers aren't going to stock parts for a car that they may only sell one or two of.

My choice would be well cared for, pre-owned e46 M3, I could pick one up for $40k drop another $5k-$10k in tasteful mods and laugh my way to the bank with the left over $50k, but to each his own.

it's overrated due to also the driveability issues. SMG is still not ready for primetime and hence the e90 going to a different design. The tranny was jerky if shifting below 3500rpm, it's big, it's heavy and it doesn't handle that well. In regards to the E39 M5, I had a highly modded one, 55,000 miles, NEVER burnt a single drop of oil and IMO a far superior car and an instant classic.

In regards to the E46 M3, it's very yester-year. The 335i is a far superior car. With a LSD and a few mods, you will walk all over the E46 M3 both in a straight line and at the track.

Yester year? I know it is about 7 years old but there is something very different between an M car and it's more daily driverish newer generation sibling. On the track, an e30 M3 owns an e36 325i, an e36 M3 owns an e46 330i, and the e46 M3 still dominates an e92 335i. Lack of a limited-slip diff and all the issues with overheating on the 335i, just go to show that the e92 was not made for the track the same way an M car is. It would require significant upgrades on an e92 to outpace a stock e46 M3 on a track (suspension, brakes, oil cooler, limited slip diff, etc).

With the "old looking" E46 M3 comment. With the new model look out, the older M just doesn't fit in.
